Viewpoint: Time for an end to horrible words


Dr Jane Frances, Education Advisor at Changing Faces, writes... 

Words like ‘beast’, ‘freak’, ‘ugly’ and ‘undateable’ are loaded. Why else would tv companies come up with titles like Beauty and the Beast: the Ugly face of Prejudice, and The Undateables (of which everyone seems to say “If you can just get past the stupid title it’s a really good programme”) and, most recently, The Ugly Face of Disability Hate Crime? These words stir up something horrible – something cruel and voyeuristic – every time.

When I was new at Changing Faces, just meeting my first families and visiting their children’s schools, one mum, whose little girl had a birthmark, recalled how her son came home from school and asked, “Mum, what does ugly mean?” This was the word his classmates used to identify his little sister the day she started school.
