Dear Friends:

In the next week or so we will finally launch our new website.  We will continue to offer our live-stream for free.  We will also be offering unlimited access to our extensive audio/video archive for a $10/month membership fee as part of the SmallsLIVE Revenue Share Project.

The SmallsLIVE Revenue Share Project is an initiative to create the most fair revenue sharing streaming system ever designed.  It has been created by musicians for musicians.  Subscribers to SmallsLIVE will be directly benefitting the artists and clubs.  The goal is to document the work created at Smalls each night, create a revenue stream for the artists and subsidize the operating costs for the venues.
 
The SmallsLIVE Audio/Video Archive is an archive of nearly every show performed at Smalls Jazz Club since 2007.  In 2011 video began to be archived in addition to audio.  With very little gaps, the SmallsLIVE Archive represents the comprehensive work of nearly 1000 musicians at Smalls Jazz CLub with more than 10,000 shows archived and growing each week.
 
All membership fees will be pooled and distributed in the following manner.  1) expenses for operating the website and archive are deducted.  2) the remaining income is split 50/50 divided into an Artist’s Pool and a Company Pool.  The revenue in the Company Pool will be used for the expense of operating the clubs and paying the musician salaries.
 
The revenue in the Artist’s Pool will be divided up among all the artists in the archive based on the system of how much they get listened to within a 3 month pay period.  Each artist (either as a leader of a group or as a side-person in the group) gets credited with minutes as subscribing members stream their performances in the archive.  At the end of a 3-month pay period, each artists total number of minutes gets divided by the archive’s overall total.  This percentage is what the artist gets paid from the Artist Pool.
 
Each artist has their own account with SmallsLIVE where they can edit their personal information and public profile as well as have access to all of their recorded performances.  Leaders of the show can “tag” artists to the show so that they receive their minutes credited correctly.  The Leader of a show may also download their recordings to do with as they wish.  The artists own 100% of the recording and 100% of the copyright of the compositions.  Artists may use the material for any purpose they like including selling it to third parties.  SmallsLIVE only has the right to retain the show in the Audio/Video Archive for the exclusive use of subscribing members of SmallsLIVE.  Furthermore, arists may select material from their recorded shows and license them through SmallsLIVE for actual sale through our store, SmallsLIVE TRACKS and iTunes.  Revenue from sales of downloads and licensed albums goes directly to the artist and not to the Artist Pool.  Leaders of shows have the right to make any performance not available to the public.  Any or all of the musicians who played on a show may be tagged as “leaders”.

We hope to launch by the first week of October.  We feel that even a moderate success with gaining subscribing members will have an enormous impact on our musical community and the clubs.  In the end everyone has something to gain from our project.  I welcome commentary and constructive thoughts.
