Castro Cares also provides compassionate care to those at risk and living on the streets in the Castro/Upper Market. Instead of creating our own social service system, Castro Cares taps into the city's existing system. Castro Cares pays for 16 hours a week of homeless outreach workers, from SF HOT, plus the Department of Public Health pays for 4 hours a week of case managers to consistently walk the district, build relationships and connect people to the social services system. Castro Cares homeless outreach workers are also working closely with our community institutions to create trust with those at risk.
The Castro Cares homeless outreach team has begun working closely with Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church providing care, case management and services to people identified by the church. A recent successful referral from the church is now is receiving case management from the Castro Cares team.
- This individual has a long history of trauma, has been homeless for 10 plus years (since the age of 13), abused while in foster care as a child, has a limited ability to develop trusting relationships and is extremely uncomfortable being inside. Despite this history, through working with the Castro Cares case manager, this person has identified goals which involve developing trusting relationships and living in an apartment. Weekly Castro Cares case management visits have resulted in this person agreeing to try out a stabilization room and in fact is moving into a room this week. With constant support from the Castro Cares team, this person might just be able to make it. A life improved because of your donations to Castro Cares!
