The eSojourner

Chalice Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Can you fill in the blank? I'm a Disciple because _________________________.

My answer is pretty simple. I'm a Disciple because I get to say, "Yes."

I'll count the yeses in weddings and funerals, at least this time around. The first wedding I ever did was for a young couple who already had a child who was about a year old. She had two children from previous relationships. One of those was born when she was in high school; the other was born when she was married to another man a few years later. He was only three years old. I tried not to worry too much about the math there. She and her fiancé came to the church hoping that somehow the church could help them get it right. So we did budgeting, and household duties, and scheduling together. More and more all the time, I realize how many pastors would not or could not say yes to that couple. I'm so glad I could. They were actually the harder yes than the seven same-sex weddings I've done in the past two years. They had far more struggles ahead of them than the couple who'd aiready been together 10 years, or 30 years, actually.

The second funeral I did was for a child who had no ties to any church. He'd died as a result of abuse by a family member. The third funeral I did was for a man who had committed suicide; it took a few calls for his long-time girlfriend to find a place to hold his funeral. I got to say yes on behalf of Chalice that day.

So why are you a Disciple? The Region would like to know. If you can fill in the blank, let me know, and we'll share it.

peace--Abby
We're happy to welcome long-term volunteers from Global Ministries to Chalice at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 15th. Doug Smith and Katie Moyer will be speaking about their work in Mexico on behalf the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). You're invited!
World Communion Sunday

Along with many other Protestant churches, we'll celebrate World Communion Sunday on October 4th. Because we already celebrate communion each week, we don't have to worry about adding that. We do want to honor the global nature of the Church. So, can you read aloud a language other than English? In worship on Sunday, October 4th? Spoiler: it will be something from the Bible. Bonus points if you own a Bible in another language!

If you answered, "Yes," (or even, "Maybe"), then send Rev. Abigail an email.
