City Council Meeting: September 29, 2015

Self Contained Breathing Apparatus

Fire Department to Purchase New Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus

At last night's meeting, Niagara Falls City Council approved the purchase of new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to replace aging equipment for the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

A committee was formed of Fire Department staff from various divisions including career and volunteer firefighters, Training, Fire Prevention, and in-house technicians, to review all proposals submitted in response to the RFP for new equipment. As a result of the four-phase process, A.J Stone was selected as the preferred proponent.

Huron Street Residential Development

Rezoning Allows For Residential and Commerical Developments

Last night, Council approved an application to rezone the lands known as 4750 Huron Street to a site specific General Commercial zone which would permit the construction of a 3 storey, 9 unit apartment building. The development will be operated by Gateway Niagara and will assist in providing additional and affordable housing choices in the neighbourhood.

Council also approved an application to rezone land on the southwest corner of McLeod Road and Kalar Road to General Commercial in order to permit a commercial plaza.

Last night, the Mayor and City Council recognized the Niagara Falls Falcons Minor Mosquito, Niagara Falls Falcons Senior Major Rookie and Niagara Falls Falcons Minor Rookie Baseball teams that recently won Provincial Championships! Congratulations to all three teams on a job well done!

Hear the Beep Where You Sleep

Fire Prevention Week: October 4 - 10, 2015

At last night's meeting, Council proclaimed October 10th as "Fire Service Recognition Day", as part of the annual Fire Prevention week starting on October 4, 2015. This year's theme is "Hear the Beep where you Sleep". Fire Departments across the country will be educating the public on the importance of working smoke alarms, with a focus on having one in each bedroom of the home.

The Niagara Falls Fire Department would like to invite you and your family to attend a Fire Prevention Week Kick-Off event on Saturday October 3, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This free event will be held at Station One, 5809 Morrison St. and will feature educational activities, demonstrations, a BBQ, prizes, giveaways and much more!

Waste Reduction Week: October 19 - 25, 2015

The week of October 19-25, 2015 has been proclaimed "Waste Reduction Week".

Waste Reduction Week aims to inform and engage Canadians about the environmental and social ramifications of wasteful practices. It strives to educate, engage and empower Canadians to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

Also, mark your calendars for Saturday, October 3, 2015 for the Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day in Niagara Falls. To help Niagara Falls residents dispose of household hazardous waste and to ensure that they are disposed of safely, please visit the Recycling Centre on October 3, from 8am-3pm, located at 4935 Kent Ave (access is from Industrial Street).

 
MacBain Community Centre

Join us for MacBain Community Centre's 10th Anniversary!

Today is the 10th Anniversary of the Macbain Community Centre! Please join us in celebration from 4:00pm to 7:00pm tonight. Complimentary swim passes, cake and cookies will be available (while quantities last).

Mayor Jim Diodati and partner representatives from the YMCA of Niagara and the Niagara Falls Public Library will bring greetings at 5:00pm.

2015 Niagara Falls TD Tree Days Event

On Sunday, October 4, 2015 the City of Niagara Falls will host a local TD Tree Days event at which dozens of community volunteers will plant 450 trees at Fernwood Park and the surrounding storm pond trail. The event is made possible through the generosity of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

Mayor Jim Diodati will take part by helping to plant a ceremonial tree to commemorate the initiative. Sunday's tree planting event is one of over 140 taking place across the country as part of TD Tree Days.
