A Letter From SciFY

September  2015

 Autumn is another beginning

Hi there! We are so glad there is so much good news to share with you.

(We even had to redesign our site because we are working on so many exciting things, that the old one could not communicate what we are up to! Come on, tell us: How do you like it? )

Read in this issue what has been keeping us excited:

We have been creating assistive technologies.

  • We have created 2 games for blind children and we are designing the third.

  • With the financial help of GFOSS (EEL/LAK), we will be offering the first results for people with visual impairments in mid October.

  • We are building other solutions for people with motor and cognitive disabilities...

We have been sharing knowledge: we were glad to meet hundreds of you at the SciFY Academy events.

We have been helping the civil society bring more impact: We are creating a volunteer management platform and planning to offer it to all for free. Very soon to be released!

We have been together in this. We could not have done it without your support. Please continue bringing in ideas, help and spreading the good news.

Thank you, and have a wonderful “New Academic Year” ;-)

The latest news

Refreshing SciFY

We salute the new academic year with a new and refreshed appearance @ our site!

Have you ever wondered what exactly we are working on? Check out our site here to learn more for the 4 impact areas we are focusing on, and our real impact. Do you want to join the team? Check out here our new Call for Action for Volunteers in order to form three new business units.

Sharing Knowledge:

SciFY Academy

Sharing open knowledge @ SciFY Academies

5 events, 12 speakers, approximately 500 participants, 1 cause...

Google Analytics, Business Model Canvas for NGOs, Sentiment Analysis…. were some of the most well-attended events.

This year we continue to share open knowledge every month with everyone.

You can read more, download some of the past SciFY Academies' presentations or even watch them here.

Volunteer Management Platform for free

Volunteer management platform for all NGOs, for free?

Yes, this is what we are doing right now. We are quickly progressing in the development of our new project VoluntEasy that will allow any organisation that is working with volunteers to keep track of them in every step of their journey, from the time they express their interest until they are assigned with a task. With graphs, statistics, actions calendar, notifications and many more features, we aspire to make it the ultimate volunteers management tool.

Very soon, major Greek organizations will use it to  manage their volunteers, organizational units and actions.

Sounds interesting? Take a look here.

City’R’US:
We are the City

How would you like to share with your fellow citizens your experience from life in the city?

Share the nice parts: nice routes, little secrets… And report the problems: Dangerous spots, or spots inaccessible to disabled people?  And what is more, how would you like it if your municipality used this info to better design its services?

This is what we will be working on, on Radical, our 1st EU project! You can learn more here and have your say here.

More on this, when we are done with all the paperwork.
Stay tuned!

Helping the disabled communicate: Think Freedom

We are working with major disability institutions and hospitals to create a system that will allow people with disabilities communicate, play, and get better faster. Well, this summer we created a system that allows people with movement disabilities communicate with a computer using various assistive tech devices, we created a basic version of a communication software for them, and much more. We will very soon look for funding to make this a final, ready solution that will be offered to all, for free.

Act as a group, collaborate and do great things!

Imagine an online platform that operates as a network of citizen groups, where everyone can join or start a group, collaborate, exchange thoughts and stories, organize events and actions and basically act in the framework of the Civil Society for a common cause.
Well, that's what we did! Active Commons is one of our newest projects and you can
learn more here.

Tennis for blind people is ready!

By the end of October the whole series of electronic games for blind children and adults LEAP will have been completed. The first two, Tic Tac Toe and Tennis are ready and you can play here and be part of the online community here. Want to know when the third game will be released? Click here.

Changing public consultation in Greece

We are testing the Beta Version of DemocracIT Platform and it will soon be ready for use. Want to know more for the vision of this project? See here. If you want to be informed for all the latest news for the online platform of public consultation DemocracIT and for #e-gov, #e-participation and #e-democracy click here.

Helping people see and study: ICSee & ICStudy

We are glad to announce that SciFY, represented by George Giannakopoulos, started working on ICSee and ICStudy.
ICSee is a mobile and tablet application that makes everyday life of people with serious visual impairments easier. The application processes the image on the screen according to the user’s needs (zoom in, conversion to negative or greyscale, increase the contrast, etc.) and provides in real time an image that is is easier for the user to see. Stay tuned here for all the latest news.

A student with serious visual impairments can’t access high school education since there are only a couple that are targeted to that group of students, so we are creating a solution. Through an interactive board and a computer, the student can see what appears on the school board in real time and be part of the class. Are you interested? Check here the progress of this project.

GFOSS is supporting us financially in order to add features and create the first version of ICSee and ICStudy and offer them for free and of course as open source projects.

Reinforcing Democracy together, Wrap-up Video

We are proud to announce that project PPI is completed with the collaboration of Culture Polis and Place Identity and we chose International Day of Democracy on September 15th to share the results of the project with a wrap-up video and you can watch it here.

Key Project Funding

DemocracIT, LEAP and PPI projects are funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the EEA Grants Greek NGO Programme “We are all Citizens”. The Bodossaki Foundation is the Fund Operator of this Programme. The Programme aims to strengthen civil society and enhance the contribution of NGOs to social justice, democracy and sustainable development.

Creating a
Dream Team

For one more summer, our employees and interns formed
a great team! Students from universities all around Greece helped us work on great projects such as ThinkFreedom, to help people with disabilities.
