Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing "surprised" at Epping Forest Youth Council's three-to-one vote in favour of UK remaining in EU
A debate on the UK's future in the European Union involved members of the Epping Forest Youth Council at its Youth Conference on Friday.
About 90 young people took part in the event at the Civic Offices, Epping.
The youth council members have been elected by their fellow pupils from schools across Epping Forest.
Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing gave a short talk about the importance of a democratic system that balances the rights and responsibilities of our citizens.
She told the Youth Council members about the celebrations going on in Parliament this year to mark significant anniversaries in the development of democracy and freedom in the UK - in particular the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the first Parliament.
Mrs Laing said the debate, in which most of members participated, was brilliantly chaired by Epping Forest Youth Council chairman Matthew Tinker.
Mrs Laing said: "It was an excellent debate. I was surprised that the result, 3 to 1 in favour of remaining in the EU, was so decisive. I had expected it to be closer.
"I am very pleased that our young people are so well informed about this extremely important subject which we will all be debating at length over the next few months!"
