Boxworks containers in motion

Nearly all 20 of the Boxworks containers located adjacent to Engine Shed are now in place, and will be completed in just 2 weeks time. The containers are being transformed over the coming weeks into custom-designed workspace for the creative, digital and high-tech industries. These will provide additional capacity for Engine Shed, which reached full occupancy in its first year, and the cluster of businesses and projects wanting to be part of this growing cluster.

The Bristol SETsquared Centre, within Engine Shed, has also seen record levels of sustained occupancy and it is envisaged that some of the current virtual SETsquared members will now take space in Boxworks. We are looking forward to working with Shape Studio designers on the styling of the containers which will provide a creative environment for tech and digital SMEs wanting to grow their small teams into a larger space.

This development will address part of the shortage of affordable, flexible and curated workspace before the second phase of Engine Shed opens, with funding from the West of England LEP. Engine Shed phase 2 is expected to open in late 2017, very close to Engine Shed.

Although Boxworks will not be a permanent installation, it is very much part of the strategic vision for the regeneration of the Enterprise Zone in Bristol, creating employment space for businesses that will benefit the wider West of England.

Give A Monkeys
We are pleased to announce that we have raised £350 so far during the FUNDraise a Glass events and Temple Studios/Engine Shed breakfast mixer. That means we are well over half way to this year's target of £500 which will go towards several West of England charity projects.

The next Give a Monkeys fundraising social at Engine Shed will be announced this month so keep your eyes peeled.  Many thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
Thanks also to those of you who did some fantastic baking and to the consumers of vast quantities of sugar during the Macmillan Coffee morning in September. This year we raised £137.86 for Macmillan Cancer Support, £32 more than last year.

Current exhibition - Deki: Changing Lives Through Technology
Deki have teamed up with Technical Evangelists from Microsoft to build an interactive display using Kinect, the aim of which is to connect passers-by with Deki’s entrepreneurs around the globe.
To date online microfinance charity, Deki and its community of over 3,000 lenders have crowdfunded over £500,000 in microloans and together changed the lives of nearly 18,000 people in the developing world. This interactive installation inspired by the story of Halima Namutosi, a South Sudanese refugee, will demonstrate how entrepreneurs in the developing world are working their way out of poverty by being connected with lenders in the U.K. (and overseas) through the Deki website.

This will run until 30 October.

Next on will be City of Bristol College students exhibition about happiness and light.

Visitor travel survey and results
In September we conducted a visitor travel survey as part of Engine Shed's travel plan to monitor our visitor's travel methods and to find out how we can encourage more sustainable forms of transport to Engine Shed. The results in this time period showed that 76% of visitors travelled to Engine Shed by more sustainable means than by car as driver, better than last year's 69%.

You can view the percentage of each travel method in this diagram:
