I had a great conversation with a friend this week regarding the frustration of working with youth today. We were commiserating on the decline in culture and, specifically, the decline in certain attitudes toward sacrifice, hard work, and perseverance. The NEW & improved PSAT is Wednesday, October 14, 2015.  Get ready, get set and go into the exam fully aware of the new question formats and scoring parameters. No essay but fairly different question prompts.

Attention:  Juniors are encouraged to sign up for one of the fourteen FREE,  90-minute Kaplan PSAT Cram Sessions  at this link:  kaptest.com/psatcram    Topic covered are:

ATTENTION PARENTS:  PLEASE do not park in either of the circle drives in front of the school. These are fire lanes as well as drive through lanes and you are hindering the flow of traffic if you park your car there.  Please use the provided parking spaces if you need to park and come into the school.  

Grammar School Headlines

Kindergartners--have created fire trucks by drawing shapes and are learning about fire prevention.  Remember...October is Fire Prevention Month, check your fire alarm batteries.
1st Graders--started studying maps and globes and learned about their community of Fredericksburg.
2nd Graders--learned about the Caddo Indians in Texas History.
3rd Graders--collected over 580 pounds of food for the Fredericksburg Food Pantry and took it to the center on October 2nd.
4th Graders--began our quest to learn all 50 US states and capitals, their spellings, and their abbreviations and locations on a map. It will take us several months to memorize them all, but we are up to the challenge. Rak Chazak!
5th Graders--started Anne of Green Gables . We totally agree with Anne Shirley when she said, "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."
Third Graders and the Grammar School collected over 580 pounds of food for the Fredericksburg Food Pantry as a service project in September.

Cross Country Results ~ Comfort

October 3, 2015
Exciting news from the Cross Country Team:  Boys 9th -12th Grade Team placed third out of 8 teams in JV. Lane Sawtelle placed 1st with a personal best of 18:45 for the three mile course.  Jesse Mayer placed 3rd in the Varsity with a time 12:48 in a field of 119 runners on a 2 mile course.  The team has one more meet in Bandera on October 12 before they will focus their attention for a state title in Waco on October 31, 2015.  We are proud of the progress each of these athletes have made.  We had 11 personal best marks at the last meet. We appreciate Coach Kevin Perez’s efforts in training these great young athletes.
Junior Varsity Boys:  Lane Sawtelle 1st 18:45; Harley Pedregon 10th 19:08; Parker Given 13th 19:31; Jack Wynn-Smith 14th 19:32, Lane Pressler 59th 22:29; Dan Meek 66th 22:57; and Ben Ashley 74th 23:28 in a field of a 100.

Heritage Lunches
 

Opa's Monday:  This semester (August - December) students may order monthly.  Deadline: Monday prior to each month.  No changes may be made mid-month.  Beginning January 4th students will order for the entire semester.  A new and improved order form is provided; you may also find the order form in the Opa’s box. Opa’s orders should be delivered to the school not Opa’s.
 
West End Wednesday:  You may pick up an order form from the ‘West End Pizza Co. Box’ in the teacher workroom or go online to: http://www.westendpizzacompany.com/heritage-school.html and place your order.  Payment may be made online or with a check placed in the box each Wednesday. 

Kelani Yogurt Thursday:  Kelani lunch delivery includes an entrée, bag of chips, bottle of water and a coupon for a small yogurt (expires weekly) at $7 per lunch.  Kelani is allowing orders to come in throughout the semester.  Send payment to Heritage School if paying by cash or check (made payable to Kelani Yogurt).  To pay by credit card go to: http://mkt.com/kelaniFBG  click on 'Heritage School Lunch Program'

West End Pizza Fridays: Here’s how it will work:  Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Sausage and Cheese pizza will be available.  Pizza (per person) will cost $140.00 for the school year.  Please prepay, checks should be made payable to Heritage School.
 
Heritage is considering a Tuesday lunch option, until then students will need to bring a brown bag lunch on Tuesday. As soon as we have information we will communicate details.

The Morning Rotary Club of Fredericksburg is taking applications for their legendary International Exchange Program. This is an 11-month exchange to almost anywhere in the world. Live with an indigenous family, go to high school, learn a new language and culture, experience an education-adventure. Open the following attachments for more information. SCRIP

WHAT IS SCRIP? SCRIP cards are gift cards from retailers that Heritage purchases at a discount and resells to parents and friends at face value. With every SCRIP purchase, our school earns a 1%-60% rebate, depending on the store. Scrip cards can be purchased for a variety of items including groceries, gasoline, clothing, restaurants, and many more vendors.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Families order online each week. The school approves the order at the beginning of the week. Families send a check to school OR can pay online. The SCRIP cards are sent home with the student by the end of the week.

NEW TO SCRIP? Each family can set up an account on ShopWithSCRIP.com and purchases SCRIP cards online. When registering, use the enrollment code for Heritage School of 2L3L669314532.??

EXISTING ACCOUNTS? Current SCRIP users should sign on to www.ShopWithScrip.com and choose “Change Profile/Password” to update your account with your student’s 2014-2015 grade and teacher.

SCRIP will benefit the Heritage School 15th Graduating Class Expenses for the Class of 2016.

Question:

What can my student wear on Spirit Dress Friday?

Answer:  

Page 37 of the Parent Student Handbook:
If students wish to participate in this special day, the following guidelines apply: 
  • Closed toe shoes - no backless shoes – no bling
  • A Heritage shirt or Heritage t-shirt
  • Plain Blue jeans:  no fraying, no holes, no “bling”
  • Skinny jeans are not appropriate.
  • Girls may wear any color nail polish.
  • There is no charge for participation in Spirit Fridays. 
The Administration will be the final authority as to what is/is not appropriate Spirit Friday attire.
