Center for Entrepreneurship Named to Recognize Mark and Carolyn Ain

University Trustee Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA) and his wife, Carolyn, have made a $5 million commitment in support of entrepreneurship education at the University. In recognition of the Ains’ collective philanthropy, the Center for Entrepreneurship was named the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship at a dedication ceremony today. Read the full press release.

Alum Eric Meyer to Deliver Talk on Disruptive Tech: 10/15

Eric Meyer '12 will deliver a talk, "Disruptive Tech: How Backwards Policy Stifles the Sharing Economy," on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Schlegel 207. A reception will follow the talk. Eric is the founder and CEO of Haystack, a controversial company legislated out of existence in major cities last year. He is a national contributor to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and CNN, and has been named Maryland Innovator of the Year. The event is sponsored by SPARK Entrepreneurship and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Register online or join on Facebook.


Entrepreneur-in-Residence Office Hours: 10/13

Seeking advice from a seasoned entrepreneur? Take advantage of the University of Rochester Ain Center for Entrepreneurship's Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) program. John Hawkins, vice president of Paramax Corp. and president of Benchview Management Corp., will hold office hours on Tuesday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Carol Simon Hall on River Campus. John has expertise in service and technology industries, strategic growth, and investment banking. Scott Catlin, associate vice president for technology ventures at UR Ventures and attorney, will hold office hours on Tuesday, October 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. in 1.213 CTSI Director’s Suite in the Saunders Research Building. Appointments are required and can be scheduled using our online booking system: book with John Hawkins or book with Scott Catlin; or by calling 276-3500.


UR Community: Apply to the NSF I-Corps Site Training and Grant Program

Got a technical business idea? Students at any level of study, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to apply to Cohort II of the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Site program at the University of Rochester. The program provides entrepreneurial training (two required workshops and biweekly meetings) and modest funding ($1,000 to $3,000 grant awards) to enable teams to transition their technical idea into the marketplace. Cohort II will take place during the 2016 spring semester. The application, including an Itemized Financial Plan on how the funds will be used, are due Monday, November 16 at noon via email to Matthew Spielmann. The Failure Sessions: 10/13

Digital Rochester presents The Failure Sessions. Hear from some of the region's most successful entrepreneurs on how failure and success are natural partners. Rochester Venture Adventure: 10/17

Rochester Venture Adventure is a race/scavenger hunt that will showcase the catalytic change going on in downtown Rochester’s Innovation district in a unique and fun experience. This exciting event will focus on local businesses, groups and change agents seeking to revitalize downtown. The not-for-profit, standalone race will send participants on a 2-hour adventure showcasing future downtown hot spots that will contribute to increasing the quality of life in our city. Participants will race to find clues, solve puzzles and complete tasks. Prizes will be awarded not only for speed of completion but also for enthusiasm and creative participation. The event kicks off on Saturday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. in St. Joseph's Park. Register online for $10.


Physicist and String Theorist Dr. Brian Greene Delivers Talk: 10/27

A NEXUS-NY Clean Energy event will feature Dr. Brian Greene, physicist, string theorist and author of The Elegant Universe, on Tuesday, October 27 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Ave. in Rochester.
