 Welcome to the Windsor Update.
This e-newsletter is provided by the Corporation of the City of Windsor. Our hope is to share a selection of stories that Windsorites either need to know, should know, or might just like to know about in our community.
In each issue, we’ll update you about events and schedules, meetings and announcements, and more. We’ll profile plans we’re working on and offer a variety of opportunities to share your own feedback.

Ward Meetings
The City of Windsor is holding a series of public meetings over the coming weeks, and we hope you can attend and provide input. Each meeting will begin with discussion and ideas surrounding Council’s 20-Year Strategic Vision Planning and be followed by a Ward Meeting where issues specific to your Ward will be addressed. Your attendance and input is vital to our success. Meetings in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 have already taken place, and the following will be held in October and November:

In Tribute to the Queen
The City of Windsor joined hundreds of cities and towns across Canada on
September 9th, 2015 in paying tribute to the Reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest Reigning Monarch in modern history.
Mayor Drew Dilkens led off the celebration reading from an open letter sent to the Queen:
“Windsor has had the pleasure in hosting [Her Majesty] on two separate occasions and we remember with pride Your Majesty’s presence in our community in 1959 and again in 1984. While some 30 years have passed since your last visit, we can still recall your warm and caring manner and your display of appreciation for our city and its citizenry ... On my own behalf, that of our City Council and our citizens, we forward our heartfelt best wishes in that you may enjoy many more years of health and happiness.”
Windsor’s celebration took place on City Hall Square and included the singing of Canada’s National Anthem and the Royal Anthem by singer Shayla Hudson, a tribute from Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Recipient Kathleen Thomas, who is also the Executive Director of the Multicultural Council of Windsor-Essex County, and
Citizenship Judge Normand Vachon led the re-affirmation of the Oath of Allegiance.
Buckingham Palace has calculated that today, September 9, 2015, the Queen’s reign will surpass that of Canada’s other great Mother of Confederation, Queen Victoria.

Construction at City Hall Square
Construction crews from Vollmer Inc. are currently working along the south and west sides of Parking Lot 17 to reroute underground steam lines used for heating. The project will ensure that heating continues as per usual at the existing 350 City Hall Square West facility when work begins in earnest on the new City Hall next spring.
The re-routing project at Lot 17 is scheduled to be complete by the end of this month.

Swim with Ariel
(Princess Pool Party)
In anticipation of Windsor Light Musical Theatre’s upcoming production of Disney’s Little Mermaid, Adventure Bay hosts the Swim with Ariel Princess Pool Party on Saturday, October 17.
Disney princesses mingle with fans from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Activities and more! Ariel and friends perform live and join kids in the water park from 1:00-2:00pm.
Kids are encouraged to dress like their favourite characters.
Plus, enter a draw for tickets to see Disney’s Little Mermaid on stage in November!

Fly Windsor to Orlando Direct from YQG
The City of Windsor is pleased to welcome National Airlines to YQG Windsor International Airport. National Airlines will begin non-stop service between Windsor and Orlando, Florida on Thursday, December 17, 2015.

Fire Prevention Week: October 4-10, 2015
Windsor Fire & Rescue Services will be hosting several events during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!” Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every bedroom. Activities will include the official launch at City Hall Square on October 5th at 11:30 am, Devonshire Mall (Oct. 8-10) with fire truck tours and rides, fire extinguisher simulator, fire safety booth and games, visiting various community centres for their after-school programs (Oct. 5 & 6), Open Houses at Fire Stations 2 & 7 (Oct. 6 & 7 from 6pm to 8pm). Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Windsor Fire & Rescue Services wants every Windsor resident to know that Ontario law requires working smoke alarms to be located on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. As of April 15, 2015 it became law to have working carbon monoxide alarms installed outside every sleeping area if there are fuel-burning appliances in the home and/or if there’s an attached garage. Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm requirements could result in a ticket for $360 or a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals or $100,000 for corporations.
Windsor Fire & Rescue Services recommends testing your alarms monthly, and change the battery in each alarm once a year or whenever the low-battery warning sounds. In addition, vacuum the exterior of the alarm using the soft bristle attachment on the vacuum cleaner, and replace alarms that are more than ten years old.
Home Escape Planning
Windsor Fire & Rescue Services strongly urges everyone to develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room, if possible, and check that all exits are unobstructed and easy to use.
Choose a meeting place outside, such as a tree or a lamp post, where everyone can be accounted for. If caught in smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the nearest safe exit. Call the fire department from outside the home, from a cell phone or neighbour’s home, and once out, stay out. Never re-enter a burning building.
