Alert: MS Office for Mac 2016 Broken in El Capitan

Just last week in this space, I reviewed the steps that you should take to ensure a painless install of Apple’s new operating system – El Capitan (OS X 10.11). It seems that one step was particularly prescient. I recommended that you confirm that all of your mission critical software had been updated to work with the new OS. It turns out that Microsoft Office for Mac 2016 is far from ready. (This goes for Outlook 2011, as well.)

Issues Surfaced in July
Developer reports of crashes started showing up in July when El Capitan AND Office for Mac 2016 were both still in pre-launch status. Once El Capitan launched on September 25, the forums lit up with comments from everyday users suffering repeated crashes of Word, PowerPoint and Excel with one program crash taking down any other open Microsoft apps. Even worse Outlook 2011 doesn’t seem to work at all. It’s a little reminiscent of a line from the the Warden in the 1967 Paul Newman film Cool Hand Luke opined, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.”

No Fix Date
In a press release on Friday, Microsoft announced that they’re “activity investigating the matter with Apple” but have no clear date when a fix will be available.

Hold off for Now
So, for now, if you depend on Office for Mac 2016 or Outlook 2011, I strongly advise that you refrain from updating to El Capitan. Watch for future updates here or you can follow the news online.

A Possible Work-around
If my warning is coming too late, and you’ve already installed El Capitan on your Mac, MacHow2.com has published an extensive article outlining how to fix many of the most common crashes being experienced by users of Office for Mac 2016. I can’t vouch for their solution, nor do I know anyone that has attempted their rather complex instructions. Check it out here: How to Fix Crashes in Office for Mac 2016
