NED Scoping - the final stretch

FERC Chimes in on Northeast Energy Direct

FERC has filed its comments on the Northeast Energy Direct Resource Reports. This 35 page document highlights many of the comments made by stakeholders so far, and points out the many deficiencies in the reports. It's an enlightening read, citing many areas of omission an lack of clarity that need to be resolved before FERC can complete it's Draft Environmental Impact Study.

The timing of this release is early enough to get an overview of what FERC has noted, and comment on any obvious omissions in their requests of Kinder Morgan by the Scoping Comment deadline of October 16.

If you're an affected landowner, this is a perfect time to list your concerns (See esp. request #56 of FERC's comments), though it's good to resist FERC's call to specify a "preferred path" through your property ("If you're going to build, at least make sure it follows this path").  Doing so it could be interpreted as agreeing to have the pipeline on your property.

If you've denied permission to survey this is also a good time to make sure it's on the docket. If you have a copy of the letter you sent to Kinder Morgan, denying or rescinding permission to survey, make sure to send it. If not, a simple e-comment to FERC stating so is helpful.  If surveyors are persistent in your area, you may want to print, laminate and post some of these signs.

If you still haven't officially denied Kinder Morgan / TGP permission to survey, you still can! Download, print out and send this letter  by registered mail to the address at the top. Also send a copy to FERC as a comment on the docket. You can either scan and attach it to an e-filing, or write the docket number on it and send it by snail mail:

NED - It's a Record Breaker

FERC comment analysis afficionado, Steve Trades, has been making monthly reports on traffic on the FERC Docket for NED. Along with September's Analysis, he took a glance at how NED compares to other pipeline dockets as far as volume of comments. It comes out on top - the most citizen participation ever!

Pipe Line Awareness Network for the Northeast
Receives Challenge Grant / Launches Newsletter

PLAN-NE.org is pleased to announce that a very generous supporter has put forward a $20,000 challenge grant.
Please help us match this challenge -- whether you give under $50 or over $5,000, we greatly appreciate your support of our work.

We remain engaged in proceedings in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and have filed scoping comments at FERC on several key topics (including alternatives/need, socioeconomics, drinking water supplies, and air quality).  In addition to the legal and regulatory work, we want to hire more technical experts, put some money into a PR push, and invest in strengthening our organization with some modestly paid staffing so that we are able to sustain our efforts for the long haul.

Mass Energy Heat Pump Program for Pioneer Valley
Leap-frog past natural gas conversion to efficient heat pump

Mass Energy has launched a heat pump program in the Pioneer Valley. They’ve partnered with two installers – Sandri Energy and Noonan Energy – to install heat pumps at a discounted rate. Together the dealers cover a pretty good size area in the upper Pioneer Valley. Folks are encouraged to consider installing a heat pump as a way to displace oil, propane, or electric resistance heat. Plus the ability of the heat pump to offer a more efficient cooling alternative to an old window AC in the summer potentially makes it even more cost-effective. Most importantly, however, high efficiency cold climate heat pumps are a viable alternative for folks in places where a moratorium has been imposed and offers a way to leap frog gas conversion to something more sustainable.

FRIDAY — OCTOBER 16, 2015 — CONWAY, MA
Children of the Wild - Pipeline Finale.
On October 16, we will gather, watch clips from the Pipeline Processions film series, have a panel talk with Children of the Wild, and listen to live music by Children of the Wild's side-project, Ashes to Ashes, and other bands. Together, we will share recollections and discoveries from the journey, and prepare ourselves for what is next, both in this anti-pipeline movement and in environmental movements everywhere.
The work is not done, not by a long shot; Children of the Wild is about to embark on an epic journey across the great lakes, to connect the movement here with movements across the country, and we need your help to do so! This is an opportunity to learn more about why we do the work that we do, why we do it in the way we do it, and how you can be a part of continuing to make it possible. What is happening in New England, is unfortunately not unique; the struggles are happening all over the country. But none of us need struggle alone.
6:00 - 10:00 pm
6:00-6:45 pm Film excerpts of Pipeline Processions
6:45-7:30 pm Panel Discussion with the Children of the Wild Ensemble

NO PIPEYARD HERE! — Come Protest
A demonstration to protest a proposed pipe staging area on prime agricultural land in Plainfield is starting at noon on October 18th on East Main St. (Rt. 116) just east of the Plainfield Transfer Station, near a property that Kinder Morgan has listed as a favorable site for their 30”, 50 foot long pipes slated for the pipeline. This proposed site is a 300 acre parcel and is under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR). It is one of the best agricultural areas in Plainfield.

POP, the Plainfield Opposition to the Pipeline, is planning on demonstrating with a model of the 30 inch pipe.  Please join us to demonstrate in solidarity how we value our “Right to Farm” communities and all other conserved lands in our Commonwealth like those protected under Article 97 of the State Constitution.  Bring a sign, bring a friend and, bring a voice. It’s a chance to visit a quaint rural community with a federally registered Historic District, just half a mile down the road from the demonstration area.
12 noon to 2 PM
184 East Main Street (Rte. 116) in Plainfield
