1) 8th Annual  Dogtoberfest Wiener Dog Races October 17 noon to 4 pm - now part of Colony Days!
Calling all wiener dogs and wiener wannabe racers to participate in this popular local event. This year's event will be held at the Atascadero Sunken Gardens (El Camino Real and West Mall) on Saturday, October 17 from Noon to 4 pm.

The event includes the always hilarious and wacky Wiener Dog Races and Wiener Wannabe Races that are open to any dog 25 pounds or less.  The 6-lane race track is 32 feet long. Wiener dogs & Wiener Wannabes race in separate heats. The two top race winners in each heat advance to the next round. Each dog needs two handlers, one to “release” the dog onto the track at the “go” signal, and a “catcher” at the track end.

Here's the schedule for event day:
  • Race Registrations 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Parade of Champions 1:00 p.m.
  • Wiener and Wannabe Races 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Huge raffle with gifts and gift certificates donated by local businesses valued from $20 to $100 with 1st Raffle Draw at 1:00 and 2nd Raffle Draw at 3:00.
  • Pet Costume Contest at 3:00 (any animal can participate and is free)
Racer registration is $20, which includes a racer’s goodie bag, provided by Lemos Feed & Pet Supply.  The pet costume contest is free. Event proceeds will benefit Heilmann Dog Park, Atascadero.

Participants can obtain registration forms at the Lemos Feed & Pet Supply stores in San Luis Obispo, Atascadero, Paso Robles and Morro Bay.  Registration and race details are also available online at heilmanndogpark.com, atascaderocolonydays.org or by calling (805) 466-3615 or 461-5749. Registration is available on race day beginning at 10:00 am.  Event will be held rain or shine.

3) Howl'oween at Sherwood Dog Park October 31 from 9:30 - 11:30 am
Bring your dogs (with or without costumes) and seasonal spirit to this always fun annual event at Sherwood Dog Park in Paso Robles. We'll be serving free coffee and hot cider to go along with our bake sale items lovingly prepared by our board members. Family photo portraits ($10 donation) will be available so consider your holiday greeting card requirements. We will email or send printed photos to you after the event. Predictably comical Pet Costume contest starts at 11 am with prizes for winners in the following categories:
  • Best in Show
  • Spookiest
  • Funniest
  • Most Creative
  • Most Unique
Rain cancels this event. Sherwood Dog Park is located at 290 Scott Street (adjacent to the Senior Center) in Paso Robles.

2) Wiggle Waggle for Woods Humane Society - October 17

This is a great event for a great organization. Click here for more event information.

4) Dog Splash Days photos available
What a great event we had this year with 240 dogs (our maximum capacity). As in previous years, the dogs again thrilled and entertained us with their exuberance and athleticism. The yellow squeaky bananas were again the perfect floating toy for the event. We are so fortunate to have our talented photographers Jeff Bowen, Gail Gresham, and Char Holway donate their time and talents to the event. You can view the event photos, organized by day and swim session, on our website. Proceeds from the photo purchases go directly to Vineyard Dog Park. These great photos will make your holiday greeting cards extra special and personal.

5) Dog parks needs tennis balls !
Both Sherwood and Vineyard Dog Parks are in need of tennis balls. We're contacting local tennis clubs for donations but can use your help. If you know any tennis players, we appreciate your asking them for used tennis balls. Just drop the balls in the receptacles at either dog park and savor the good karma that will come from your act of kindness.

See you at the park!
