"The only way to survive is by taking care of each other." ~ Grace Lee Boggs

Through her 100 years, Grace Lee Boggs inspired and provoked countless people in Detroit, the United States, and around the world to be revolutionaries and solutionaries in growing our souls and growing our communities. From her work in the Black Power movement, to writings about the philosophy of change and organizing, to starting Detroit Summer to revitalize the city and empower youth, and to the James and Grace Lee Boggs School, we join with many in honoring her life, her work, and legacy.

Here's a few more words from Grace Lee Boggs below. You can see many of her interviews with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now and watch the PBS documentary about Grace Lee Boggs, American Revolutionary, free online through November 3rd.

"You don't choose the times you live in, but you do choose who you want to be, and you do choose how you want to think."

"Detroit, which was once the symbol of miracles of industrialization and then became the symbol of the devastation of deindustrialization, is now the symbol of a new kind of society, of people who grow their own food, of people who try and help each other, to how we begin to think, not so much of getting jobs and advancing our own fortunes, but how we depend on each other. I mean, it’s another world that we’re creating here in Detroit. And we had to."

IDEA's Custom Designed Tours

Over the past several years IDEA has designed and led several Learning Tours for schools and groups, and we are excited to be turning more of our attention to these types of tours as we look forward. Tours designed specifically for your group can be tailored to your groups' needs and goals and can help support new or ongoing change efforts.

Next week IDEA will lead a tour for the Partnership for Change in Vermont as an opportunity for teachers, students, and district leaders from Burlington and Winooski, Vermont to see and learn from schools practicing proficiency-based learning, restorative justice, and advisory programs in New York City, with a particular focus on ELL students. Follow along October 12-14 at #P4CNYCTour.

For more info about designed tours and to contact us to discuss a potential tour for your group, visit Learning Tours on our website.

Are We Finally Ending the Battle of the Edu-Tribes?

Anyone who has spent time during the last decade or so working for the betterment of American public education will tell you the same thing: It’s ugly out there, and you’re going to need to pick a side.

Time to Abolish Columbus Day

Once again this year many schools will pause to commemorate Christopher Columbus. Given everything we know about who Columbus was and what he launched in the Americas, this needs to stop.
