A FUTURE FOR WATER IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?

More than 30 years after the term sustainable development was coined, and just about when the Sustainable Development Goals are adopted, we ask: What is the future for Sustainable Development? Nitin Desai, who introduced the concept of sustainable development and chaired the Rio+10 Johannesburg Summit on sustainable development in 2002 reflects on the role water plays in marrying development and the environment. As high level speaker at the opening the IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition, October 18-22, Jordan, he will put forward his views on the critical role of the water sector and its professionals in leading the sustainable development agenda. Are they up to the task?

LEARNING REVOLUTIONS: TOWARDS WATER PROFESSIONALS 3.0?

Professional capacities are critical to transform water management. Not only capacities to ‘catch-up’ but also to leap beyond current practices. How to upgrade human resources capacities to avoid undermining the progress made on universal access to water and sanitation? How to get vocational training and professionalism high on the radar of political leaders and water managers alike? What initiatives are effective to get water professionals up to speed with 21st century practices using new technologies, ICT, social media etc?

The Water and Development Congress & Exhibition, held in Jordan, 18-22 October, offers a unique opportunity to explore the current opportunities and challenges on growing professional and sector-wide capacities.

DE-CARBONISING THE WATER SECTOR: ARE WE GETTING THERE …. ON TIME?

The key agents of change towards a carbon neutral water sector are the utility leaders championing this vision. Are they ready to accept their responsibility and change the energy footprint of their operations? The political and societal will to change is critical to achieve a urban water -energy evolution. Are local governments enabling integrated solutions working across silos of water and energy utilities? Are citizens getting mobilized to adopt new household practices to safe energy on water heating? And the regulators….. are innovations hampered or stimulated to get to renewable energies for water supplies and waste water treatment? Join the debate on a ‘zero carbon’ water sector at the Water and Development Congress in Jordan.
