Equal Pay for Equal Work

It has been a busy October - and we're just getting started.  First, we have exciting local news to share. On Monday, October 5th, the San Jose/Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce announced a partnership with NWPC Silicon Valley to encourage members to sign a pledge supporting equal pay for equal work. This pledge is a big step in closing the wage gap in Silicon Valley. While this was a collaborative effort, we want to give a special recognition to NWPC-SV board member, Colleen Haley, for spearheading this effort 6 months ago.  This announcement was the perfect opening act to the news that Governor Brown signed an update to the state's Fair Pay Act  requiring that employees receive equal pay for “substantially similar” work, even if their job titles aren’t actually the same as their colleagues’.

We would love to see you this month! Here's where you'll find us:

October 8 - Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Made in LA

October 18 - OctoBRAfest at the San Jose Women's Club

October 24 - First Campaign Training for the 2016 election cycle with Cathy Allen

Today is Latina Equal Pay Day, marking the day when the average Latina worker’s wages catch up with the wages earned by the average non-Latino White man last year. This is not just about the kinds of jobs Latinas hold; the gap persists between workers in the same occupations, from surgeons to customer service representatives. In 2013, women in the U.S. working full time year round made only 78 cents for every dollar a man made. Hispanic women earned only 56 cents.

This demographic is a substantial majority of the Silicon Valley population.  NWPC-SV dedicates our partnership announcement to ending the wage gap especially for Latina/Hispanic women.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Local data shows that over the course of this month our local police and shelter hotlines will receive thousands of calls for service - for help, that could be life saving. In 2014 there were 21,000 calls answered by our local crisis hotlines and 5,052 domestic violence related calls to local law enforcement agencies. In the same year 2,000 victims were unable to access local shelter services because there simply wasn't any space

Many of us have been blessed to never have to create a safety plan, to hide money as a getaway fund, or to be hyperaware of the location of each potential weapon. So many of us can go about our days oblivious to the ties that immigration status and financial need create between victims and abusers.

We have the opportunity to live in a way that creates space for those among us to come forward and find safety - to find hope. It is my hope that we can continue to strengthen the social safetynet for those among us who may be suffering in silence to come forward and find freedom. I encourage you to find time in your lives to attend an awareness event this month and become part of a community that strongly says "No More" Domestic Violence. (credit: Ann Grabowski)
