National Forum members orchestrate largest scale U.S. World Heart Day effort

On September 29, 2015 the National Forum and its members launched the largest World Heart Day effort in the organization's history. With support from World Heart Day-U.S. sponsors Amgen and AstraZeneca, we worked with seven communities to prevent heart disease:
  • Indianapolis, IN: The National Forum partnered with IUPUI to carry out the “Just One Thing Challenge”. This campaign encouraged Indiana residents to adopt one heart healthy behavior throughout the month of September and asked the community to support these Hoosiers through various promotions and events. Winnie Ballard, the first lady of the Indianapolis and our honorary World Heart Day chair, kicked off the “Just One Thing Challenge” on September 1.
  • Green Bay, WI: Mayor Jim Schmitt partnered with the National Forum  to encourage citizens to get moving this fall. City residents joined Mayor Schmitt and civic leaders in a “Move with the Mayor” series every Tuesday in September to improve their heart health and discuss community issues. The Mayor plans to continue these walks year-round.
  • New Orleans, LA: The National Forum partnered with New Orleans East Hospital and the American College of Cardiology’s CardioSmart to help Big Easy residents manage their cholesterol. The partners hosted free cholesterol screenings and a free “Managing Your Cholesterol” Dinner & Learn on World Heart Day, led by our immediate past chair Dr. Keith Ferdinand. The capacity crowd included 100 people for the Dinner & Learn and more than 70 people received cholesterol screenings.
  • Chicago, IL: The Chicago Department of Public Health partnered with the National Forum  to celebrate World Heart Day at the Federal Plaza Farmers' Market. The event featured healthy cooking demonstrations, workshops on how to shop heart-healthy and free blood pressure screenings.
  • Oakland, CA: Former National Forum Board member led a partnership with the American Heart Association - Bay Area to get residents moving on World Heart Day. Frank Shorter, two time Olympic Marathon medalist, joined Bay Area residents on a brisk walk around Snow Park to lower their risk for heart disease.
  • National Forum Members: The National Forum worked with our members to get the word out about cholesterol's role in heart disease and stroke prevention. Together, with the FH Foundation, CDC, NACCHO, and many others, we hosted a World Heart Day social media campaign that provided U.S.-based Twitter and Facebook users tips and tools they can use to manage their cholesterol. We also hosted our first-ever Thunderclap to help spread the word about cholesterol management on World Heart Day.
  • Florida: Florida’s Surgeon  General, John H. Armstrong, led a statewide effort  that engaged over 50,000 people in events that promoted physical activity and provided CPR training.
