October 2015 E-Newsletter

The room was full of pregnant women with their husbands. The instructor said, "Ladies, remember that exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic muscles and will make delivery that much easier. Just pace yourself, make plenty of stops and try to stay on a soft surface like grass or a path."

"Gentlemen, remember -- you're in this together. It wouldn't hurt you to go walking with her. In fact, that shared experience would be good for you both." The room suddenly became very quiet as the men absorbed this information.

After a few moments, a man sitting at the back of the room slowly raised his hand. "Yes?" said the Instructor. "I was just wondering if it would be all right if she carries a golf bag while we walk?"

Wine of the Month

Troublemaker MV Blend 8

Troublemaker MV Blend 8 bares a deep purple hue, and offers aromas of blackberries, cherries and violets, plus touches of ground coffee and smoke. The palate couples rich, fruit-forward flavors with finessed tannins and bright acidity.

This multi-vintage is an impish blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Syrah and Zinfandel. The majority of wine comes from the 2013 vintage, with a remaining portion coming from 2012 and 2011. The younger wine brings a youthful vibrancy and freshness while the more mature wine adds complexity and structure.

Bartender of the Month

Mike Di Tota
Astoria, NY

Botanical bartender Mike of The Bonnie in Astoria, earned his degree in horticulture from the The New York Botanical Garden in 2013. This achievement was no easy feat, as he was required to identify and detail more than 1,000 different plants, herbs, and flowers by the end of his studies.

Mike capitalized on his newfound knowledge by incorporating it into his passion for making cocktails. In fact, he says that being a horticulturist has augmented his mixology philosophy. For example, rather than inventing a cocktail starting with a base spirit as many bartenders do, Mike’s process begins with seasonal fruits and herbs, and he builds the drink from there. To help inspire Mike to design unique cocktails, The Bonnie created a rooftop garden that houses an abundance of herbs, including lemon balm, thyme, rosemary, and basil. Like an artist that has a palate of colors to choose from, Mike has a palate of fresh ingredients.

Feature Bar

The Shanty
Brooklyn, NY

Owned and created by esteemed bar personality Allen Katz, the concept of Shanty is logistically unique; it is directly connected to his spirits distillery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; The New York Distillery Company.

This ambient drinking den was originally conceived to be a showroom for visitors where they could taste the distillery’s Gins and Ryes. Katz quickly saw it’s potential to showcase craft spirits from his friends in the industry. As the list of drinks grew, it naturally evolved into a full service bar with a comfortable yet industrial feel that showcases its beautiful warehouse structure.

The cocktail list features the distilled spirits made on site, whilst the back bar is home to rows upon rows of hand picked spirits from across the globe. Free distillery tours are held on Saturdays and Sundays and guests are invited to relax in the bar afterwards. Shanty also hosts a live Jazz band every Sunday.

Visit their website for more info.
