HUD Releases New Guidance Document: Determining Homeless Status of Youth | USICH Announces Upcoming Webinar

This week, HUD issued a new guidance document, Determining Homeless Status of Youth, to help providers determine and document homeless status for youth. This document is designed to ensure that youth are not being erroneously turned away from Continuum of Care (CoC) or Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) Program housing and services. The document utilizes hypothetical scenarios to help providers understand how youth meet HUD’s definition of homelessness and supports the work that HUD has been doing recently to help CoCs and youth providers end youth homelessness.

The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) will host a webinar on Wednesday, October 28th at 2:00 PM EDT with staff from HUD’s Office of Special Needs Assistance Programs (SNAPS) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB). During this webinar presenters will discuss how HUD and FYSB resources should be part of a comprehensive and coordinated community response to youth homelessness. SNAPS will review the information provided in this guidance, provide a brief overview of the resources available to serve youth who meet HUD’s definition of homeless, and answer questions that providers might have related to determining and documenting homeless status for youth. FYSB will offer a brief overview of potential resources for some of the youth who do not meet HUD’s definition of homelessness.
