Nearly 250 Ground Water Protection Council registrants combined forces with the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission and National Rural Water Association last week for a joint conference on energy and water issues in Oklahoma City.
A video kicked off the general session, highlighting Oklahoma as a national leader in energy.
Oklahoma leaders Gov. Mary Fallin, who accepted chairmanship of the 30 state Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett welcomed participants.

An in-depth Energy and Water Panel followed, which was moderated by Oklahoma Secretary of Energy and Environment Mike Teague, and featured commentary by Paula Gant, U.S. DOE deputy assistant secretary for oil and natural gas, Office of Fossil Energy and Peter Grevatt, director of the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The session concluded with an update on the GWPC and IOGCC joint-initiative, States First. As a part of this initiative, a work group comprised of 13 states, released a Primer on induced seismicity. (More in story below)
The remainder of the conference featured speakers presenting on a large number of topics related to water quality, water availability, as well as water and energy.
Shirley Neff of the Energy Information Administration and Paul Jehn of the GWPC provided a look at the National Oil and Gas Gateway project, which upon completion, will be the first public Web site where select well level data from participating states can be viewed, aggregated, and retrieved from one location.

Thirteen states partnered through the GWPC and IOGCC joint-initiative StatesFirst this past year to share and summarize current knowledge related to earthquakes potentially caused by human activity, otherwise referred to as induced seismicity.
On Sept. 28, the work group comprised of members of state oil and natural gas and geological agencies and other advisory experts from academia, industry, non-profit organizations and federal agencies released a Primer to provide a guide for regulatory agencies to evaluate and develop strategies to mitigate and manage risks of injection induced seismicity. The Primer also outlines how states can best provide information to the public in a transparent and effective manner.
The Primer has been widely covered by media outlets from across the country, since its release. More information can be found at www.statesfirstinitiative.org.
