President's Message

Greetings, MPG Members!

I’m writing to you on the eve of Track Days. After all of the planning, all that’s left is anticipation. We think we’ve got a great event on tap, and we hope you get some great experiences, ideas and stories as a result of attending.
The theme of this year’s Track Days is “Engagement.” Beyond the driving, we know that you’ll have the opportunity to engage with others. You’ll have a chance to build relationships, to meet other writers and PR pros and to have a great time socializing.

Speaking of socializing, social media will play a big role in this year’s event. We’re encouraging everyone to post about their experiences at Willow Springs on all of the social media platforms, using the hashtag #MPGTrackDays. And we’re going to incentivize (to use a current buzzword) you to do so, with door prizes, giveaways and contests throughout the event. Social media engagement really does matter, so be generous with your hashtags. Tag a manufacturer when you drive their car – we want them to notice. Tag them on Instagram when you post a photo. Tag them on Twitter, on Facebook – everywhere.

Thanks to all of the drivers who have provided their credentials, and to those who have been so graciously willing to drive qualifying laps or participate in our driver instruction program. We know that we’ve got a talented group of drivers in our organization. Qualification is designed to enhance everyone’s safety, and to identify drivers who need a little bit of instruction on track rules and etiquette. Track days can be intimidating to drivers without a lot of experience, and we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to evaluate vehicles in a safe, pressure-free environment.

So, all that’s left to say is “Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!” And let’s be safe out there.

You’ve seen the notices about the MPG Awards. Submissions are open right now through the end of the month, and I encourage you to send in your best work, and to solicit submissions from your friends and colleagues. Did you read a great piece this year, see a great video or photograph or listen to a fantastic podcast? Contact the creator and remind them about the MPG Awards.

We want the MPG Awards to be a program that rewards not only the writers, photographers and other experts who enter and win, but that also elevates our organization to greater prominence on the national stage. That can only happen if the best of the best submit their works for consideration.

We need your help. Submit your work now.

Drive safely,
Jason Fogelson

Motorsports Shows on TV; From Whence They Sprang

— story by Bill Maloney, 76 Motorsports Round Up, NBC Sports Radio Weekly

It was early 1977, and I was in the Riverside International Raceway’s media room chatting with Robert E. “Pete” Petersen, head of the Petersen Publishing empire.

I said, “Pete, how about motorsports on TV? I think I started the whole thing in Chicago, 1966.” He countered with, “No way. We at the magazine were televising hot rods, putting on car shows in the alley behind KTLA in Beverly Hills in the late 1950s.”

I told him it wasn’t the same thing. “I’m talking about a real weekly show, scripted, ongoing. My Chicago 1966-7 show was on the tube for 150 weeks.”

Pete replied, “Since when isn’t L.A. a major market?”

I replied, “Apples and oranges” as he headed for his stretch limo.

Here’s the skinny on my 150-week Motorsports International television show, which I believe was the very first one of its genre. I created it, wrote it, produced it, hosted it and did the marketing…and I didn’t know there were any ground rules.
