Skimm’d after Skimm Day celebrations
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Rapacious tiger” – Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s pet name for Iran, coined yesterday during his speech at the UN General Assembly. He still hates the Iran nuclear deal.

OREGON

THE STORY

Yesterday, at least 10 people were killed and seven more were injured in a shooting at an Oregon community college.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A 26-year-old gunman opened fire in a classroom at Umpqua Community College, south of Portland. The gunman reportedly asked for people’s religion before opening fire, and was killed after clashing with police.

President Obama responded to yesterday’s latest gun violence by saying, “thoughts and prayers are not enough.” He also reminded everyone that he’s had to say something like this before. Many times.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET AROUND TO CLEANING THE BATHROOM MIRROR…

I can see clearly now. That’s what the EPA hopes you’ll say soon. Yesterday, the agency announced a new limit on smog-causing emissions (think: power plants and factories). The new limit is seen as a compromise between businesses and environmentalists. Which of course means neither is happy. Businesses say ‘too much,’ regulation come at a big financial cost and can lead to job cuts. Environmentalists say ‘not enough,’ the Obama administration should be even stricter. It’s not easy being green.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR EAST COAST FRIENDS

Break out the rain boots. Everyone along the US East Coast is keeping an eye on Hurricane Joaquin. Or putting together memes like this. Yesterday, the Category 4 storm hit the Bahamas with 130 mph winds, and dumped between 10-15 inches of rain. Forecasters aren’t sure where it will go next – up the East Coast, or out to sea. But some states along the East Coast have declared states of emergency. They’re already expecting heavy rain this weekend from another storm. Meaning there could be serious flooding. Because sometimes when it rains, it pours.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING…

Afghanistan. Early this morning, a US military transport plane crashed there, killing at least 11 people — including six US service members. The US military is looking into what happened, but says it’s unlikely that the crash was because of fire from the Taliban. This comes as Afghan forces (helped out by the US military) have been fighting hard against the Taliban to take back a key city — which the Taliban said ‘mine’ to earlier this week. It was the group’s biggest gain in 14 years.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SPILL HOT COFFEE ON YOURSELF BEFORE AN INTERVIEW…

This is not a good sign. Yesterday, Dunkin’ Donuts ate its feelings when it announced it’s closing 100 stores. Dunkin said NBD, that number of stores is less than a donut-hole of the company’s US sales. But it also scaled back its sales expectations for the next quarter. Dunkin’s been having a hard time keeping up with the competition, since people have a few choices when it comes to picking up a pumpkin spice latte and egg sandwich in the AM. Cough, Starbucks, cough. Yesterday, shares dunked down on the news.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO SECRETLY WRITES YELP REVIEWS….

Yelp unto others as you would have others Yelp unto you.

SKIMM READS

Skimm’ologist says: this Malbec will get you into the mood for this read.

“Purity” by Jonathan Franzen

Franzen knows how to tell a good story. It involves a WikiLeaks-type organization, a “60 Minutes”-style investigative reporting group, and a girl with a lot of college debt. It’s a long one, but it’ll go fast.
