Cortado Contact Mic

NEW! Cortado Balanced Output Piezo Contact Mic On Sale NOW!

Introducing the Cortado, a piezo contact microphone with a phantom-powered, buffered, balanced output signal for incredible performance at a ridiculously low price.

We "soft-launched" the Cortado when we published an Instructable in September. To our astonishment and delight, the thing went viral and we have had trouble keeping stock!

Contact mics can be used to record or pick up anything that vibrates in the audible range. The Cortado properly matches the impedance of the piezo sensor to your recording device or console, and delivers a strong, balanced output with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Read more about the background and applications of this remarkable mic at ZeppelinDesignLabs.com.

Espresso Phantom Power Supply

Up Next: Espresso Portable Phantom Power

The Cortado requires phantom power. In the studio, that's not hard to find, but when I'm climbing the suspenders of the Golden Gate Bridge, or scaling the broadcast mast atop the Sears Tower, it's another story. Most (affordable) battery-powered field recording devices do not furnish phantom power; many don't even have XLR inputs.
Enter the Espresso, portable battery phantom power supply. The Espresso uses a 9V battery to provide hours of continuous field recording. Available Winter 2015/16.
Download your own Zeppelin! (4MB)

Download a Zeppelin! Or is it a Dirigible... or a Blimp?

A Zeppelin has a rigid frame with a fabric skin. A Dirigible has a partial frame, like a tray, upon which a big squashy bag is mounted. And a Blimp is jut the squashy bag. To download this 4MB stereo lithography (stl) model, click the picture, save the file and open with your favorite CAD program. Then print it on your 3D printer, and find out which type of airship this is.
WARNING: DO NOT PRINT AT 1:1 SCALE! We ABSOLUTELY cannot be held responsible for the results! When choosing a scale, leave enough clearance to push this thing out into the driveway.
So a Zeppelin, a Dirigible and a Blimp float into a bar...
"What'll you have?" asks the bartender.
"I'll have about a hundred thousand cubic meters of hydrogen," says the Zeppelin.
"You know I can't serve that firewater," replies the tender.
"I'll take five thousand cubic meters of helium," says the Blimp.
"Aw shucks; the Americans quit shipping helium in 1927. Look, I'd offer you some carbon monoxide, but I'm afraid it would only bring you down. The best I can do is offer you some neon from my private stash."
"That's mighty noble of you," says the Dirigible.
"That'll light me up just fine," says the Blimp.
The drinks are served and soon the mood is lighter. The Dirigible is positively buoyant.
"Hey Blimpie," says the Dirigible, "how's that job at the stadium working out for ya?"
"That job's going nowhere," says the Blimp. "I'm just running round in circles..."
"At least you have a job!" retorts the Zeppelin rigidly. "I haven't been able to get work since 1937, when--"
"We know!" the Blimp hisses.
"Well, you boys keep a stiff upper lip," the bartender says lightly.
"Lower lip," the Dirigible says firmly.
"Hey, you should try to be more flexible," the Blimp says softly.
"That's it," pops the Dirigible. "I've had it with you and your teasing," and he heads for the door.
The Blimp moves to follow him, but the Zeppelin holds him back.
"You've gotta let him go. You know he's always been a drifter."
