BIG Happenings on October 13th
Including our Wear Purple Day

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Houston Area Women's Center has an entire month of activities planned to spread awareness ... but October 13 will be an especially busy day!

Here's what we have planned:

  • Our "Wear Purple Day" to spread awareness! We hope you'll join the effort and share your purple-themed photos on social media using the hashtag #HAWCDVAM.
  • In the afternoon, we'll receive a proclamation from Mayor Annise Parker and Houston City Council to encourage everyone in Houston to wear purple and show their support.
  • Houston City Hall will be bathed in purple light beginning at sundown. If you haven't seen this before, it's beautiful!
  • Houston Area Women's Center Young Leaders will host a candlelight vigil on the steps of Houston City Hall (near the reflecting pool) at 7:30 p.m to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence in Harris County. We hope you will stop by to show your support.

All month long, we will also be sharing information and resources on www.hawc.org and on our FacebookTwitter, and Instagram pages, so please follow our posts and updates to learn the latest news. Thanks so much in advance for your support!

Stopping violence before it ever starts!

We were thrilled when we got a call from Clear Channel Outdoor and learned that they wanted to spread the word about domestic violence prevention through a national campaign by Futures Without Violence. In a nutshell, the "Teach Early" campaign encourages coaches and educators to help young people learn the fundamentals of non-violence, conflict resolution and healthy relationships. The campaign was revealed in a big way on a giant digital board in Humble at a press conference on October 1 that included representatives from Clear Channel Outdoor, Humble ISD, Family Time Crisis and Counseling Center, and the Houston Area Women's Center. Check out the story that aired on FOX 26 that evening, featuring our Manager of Children's Court Services, Pam Hobbs!

Domestic violence training for professionals
Learn how to recognize, respond, and refer

For Domestic Violence and Awareness Month, our Violence Prevention & Education Team will offer a training session for those who could encounter domestic violence survivors through their jobs (e.g., medical professionals, social service agencies, faith leaders, members of law enforcement, educators, etc...).

Cheers to Women of Wine Charities!
Check out their Grand Tasting photos

They did it again! Women of Wine Charities hosted another fabulous annual Grand Tasting. Their sell-out event took place on September 21 at The Wynden, and we are grateful for all of the chefs, sponsors, winery participants ... and, of course, the amazing Women of Wine ... for making this event possible. Proceeds benefit our mission, and our President and CEO, Rebecca White, was there to share a few words of appreciation. You can see photos from the event here.

And, please save the date for their October Happy Hour! This event will feature drink specials and tasty bites. No reservations are needed -- just a desire to socialize and enjoy the beautiful Fall weather!
