KEY 10th Anniversary Reunion Happy Hour: 10/9

The Center for Entrepreneurship celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) Scholars Program, a fifth tuition-free year for students to pursue an entrepreneurial endeavor. KEY alumni, current KEY students, KEY faculty advisers, and parents are invited to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while networking at a happy hour on Friday, October 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. KEY students, both current and past, will share stories of success and lessons learned through the program while the Center will share plans for the future. KEY Program Info Session: 10/9

Learn about the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program at an information session Friday, October 9 at 4 p.m. in Lattimore 306A. The program offers select students a fifth, tuition-free year of college to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The program is supported by the College and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Seniors will only be permitted to apply during the fall semester; the application deadline is November 1. Learn more by contacting Hillary Tatar.


Alum Eric Meyer to Deliver Talk on Disruptive Tech: 10/15

Eric Meyer '12 will deliver a talk, "Disruptive Tech: How Backwards Policy Stifles the Sharing Economy," on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Schlegel 207. A reception will follow the talk. Eric is the founder and CEO of Haystack, a controversial company legislated out of existence in major cities last year. He is a national contributor to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and CNN, and has been named Maryland Innovator of the Year. The event is sponsored by SPARK Entrepreneurship and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Register online or join on Facebook.


Meet with an Entrepreneur-in-Residence this October

Seeking advice from a seasoned entrepreneur? Take advantage of the University of Rochester Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) program. Scott Catlin, associate vice president for technology ventures at UR Ventures, will hold office hours on Tuesdays, October 13 and 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in 1.213 CTSI Director’s Suite in the Saunders Research BuildingJohn Hawkins, vice president of Paramax Corp. and president of Benchview Management Corp., will hold office hours on Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Michael Wohl, managing partner of ClimateHedge Investments and Greenspace Capital and associate director of social entrepreneurship for the Simon School, will hold office hours on Thursday, October 22 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Appointments are required and can be scheduled using our online booking system: book with Scott Catlinbook with John Hawkinsbook with Michael Wohl, or by calling 585-276-3500.


UR Community: Apply to the NSF I-Corps Site Training and Grant Program

Got a technical business idea? Students at any level of study, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to apply to Cohort II of the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Site program at the University of Rochester. The program provides entrepreneurial training (two required workshops and biweekly meetings) and modest funding ($1,000 to $3,000 grant awards) to enable teams to transition their technical idea into the marketplace. Cohort II will take place during the 2016 spring semester. The application, including an Itemized Financial Plan on how the funds will be used, are due Monday, November 16 at noon via email to Matthew Spielmann. Technology Development Fund Pre-Proposals Due 10/16

The fall 2015 round of the Technology Development Fund has started. The fund awards winning applications from faculty, staff, or students up to $100,000 to develop their technology to a commercial endpoint. A submitted invention disclosure to UR Ventures is required for an application. Pre-proposals are due October 16 and can be submitted to Omar Bakht.

Creating and Growing Innovative Entrepreneurial Businesses

Venture Jobs Foundation and the Upstate Venture Association of New York (UVANY) present "Creating and Growing Innovative Entrepreneurial Businesses" on Wednesday, October 7 from 5:15 to 8:00 p.m. at the RIT Student Innovation Hall, B-57 (park in Lot S). A panel of experts in law, accounting and venture investing will discuss building effective teams and making important strategic and operational business choices impacting future success, including how to protect key intellectual property and approaching venture investors. Rochester Venture Adventure: 10/17

Rochester Venture Adventure is a race/scavenger hunt that will showcase the catalytic change going on in downtown Rochester’s Innovation district in a unique and fun experience. This exciting event will focus on local businesses, groups and change agents seeking to revitalize downtown. The not-for-profit, standalone race will send participants on a 2-hour adventure showcasing future downtown hot spots that will contribute to increasing the quality of life in our city. Participants will race to find clues, solve puzzles and complete tasks. Prizes will be awarded not only for speed of completion but also for enthusiasm and creative participation. The event kicks off on Saturday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. in St. Joseph's Park. Register online for $10.
