Three New Outreaches!

You prayed, God answered!

First, we've prayed that God would open doors on the campuses of specific universities. Two weeks ago, I received a phone call from one of our old friends. (John only speaks Chinese, and phone calls are actually one of the most difficult things to get right because you can't see the other person's face) So at first, I didn't know who was calling and all I got was, wait five minutes and call this number. So I waited five minutes and then called the number he gave me. It turned out to be a professor at China Medical University who also pastors a small church right next to the campus. And when I say right next to the campus, I mean, next door to the dormitory and main classroom building!

Daniel asked if we could meet and talk about an opportunity to reach international and Taiwanese students together. So, after meeting, praying and considering, we believe this is one place where we can make a difference because of our previous connections and friends. We'll be starting a new work here in the next few weeks once we get the word out on campus and figure out the best time that fits with students schedules.

Second, at Taichung Baptist Church, Crista and I are going to begin teaching an English Outreach Bible Study on Sunday mornings for eight weeks beginning on October 18th. We'll be inviting all our friends in Taichung who don't know Christ to come and join us. In addition, our church is going to use this as a way to reach out to their family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, etc. and invite people to come to church. We'll have church members join us in the class and teach through a series of Jesus' encounters with people in the Gospels answering the big questions of life. We are praying that the people who come will not only hear and respond to the Gospel, but then find themselves unexpectedly connected to the body of Christ!

Third, Crista continues to have doors opened for her through her teaching. She finds herself in demand not just with children but adults. She's got more opportunities to speak to the Fulbright scholars, college students at another university in town and perhaps best of all, one of her friends here has invited her to come to her local school and begin sharing the Christmas story to the children there in November.

Here's a pic of Andrew on his 11th birthday last week. He and one of his best buddies, Tyler, went to Taipei to celebrate at an indoor trampoline center.

We Need Your Help

As God continues to open these amazing doors of ministry for us, we need your help. Here are three (3) specific ways for you to get involved.
1. Come and join us for a short term trip. We really could use you this Christmas. I've already written about this, but now it is really time to make a decision about coming over. CLICK HERE and jump to our website for the specific details including dates and costs regarding coming to help for our after Christmas trip.
2. Give and Pray - Maybe you have given in the past, perhaps you have never given. We are not funded by a mission agency which means we are completely supported by individuals and a few churches. The majority of our support comes from individuals just like you. CLICK HERE to jump to our support page.
3.  Spread the word about our mission and what God is doing here. Forward this e-mail to your pastor / mission pastor / youth pastor along with a note and ask them to consider getting involved. We would love to have your partnership in our ministry. Use the links below to pass this e-mail along or share or website: Mission Taiwan

Another Month, Another Festival

Taiwan has no lack of gods and no lack of festivals to celebrate them. It is one of the great paradoxes of living in a country with one of the highest per capita ratio of master's and doctoral degrees in the world, while at the same time the vast majority of people still retain some belief in their ancestor's gods.

This month, Taiwanese people especially worship the plague gods. This tradition comes out of their past when the majority of people didn't survive because of various illnesses and pestilence which have now been cured by modern medicine and science. In many towns, the priests and priestesses will practice their dark arts to "trap the evil spirits" and confine them to large hand made boats. These boats are then set ablaze and drug through the towns drawing all evil to it to be burned and set out to see in a final blaze. Click Here to watch a video of the ceremony.(sorry, it's in Chinese, but you can tell what is happening)

Unfortunately, sickness remains and death still comes. There was only one boat which actually saved its occupants. Noah and his family were saved from the plague of God's wrath by God's grace. This is the message of the Christian faith - the message that all people, in every culture must know. Jesus is the true ark, there is no other. The plague of God's wrath is coming and there is no other savior.

Final Notes

Mark Jeng's Family - I spoke to Mark a little this week and he had a great trip with his family. He said his parents sat quietly and listened while he and his brother-in-law Sean talked extensively for the entire ride to his grandparents home. He was very encouraged by the many notes you wrote - and I encouraged him - God is pleased by our obedience. It is His responsibility to deal with their response.

NTCU Bible Study - This week, we begin our second year at the National Teacher's University on campus!!! I'm really excited as we have so much more time now to spend developing the relationships there and following up. We have a better time to hold the Bible study which will allow us to do some follow-up rather than having students rush off to class or not even attend.

Brian Lee - Everything is on track for Brian to join us Mid-January in our new internship program. We are completing the last bit of paperwork for his visa application and, as you know, it's a bit of a process here in Taiwan. The hold-up at this point is the FBI background check. There is a bit of a backlog, so we are waiting on this last item to complete our checklist. Then one more step and we can move forward with his official visa application.
