Dear F7GU8 Friends,

Can you believe it - exactly one year ago, more than 400 of you helped us catapult our story onto the silver screen!

It’s been an eventful summer and early fall:

August - Film completed and delivered to backers via digital download and DVDs.
Our cover was lavishly designed by graphic artist Donna McCullough. http://donnamccullough.com/

That same month, BBC World News airs an abbreviated version of the film, bringing our story to 86 million viewers in 200 countries… http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33857059... a sample of comments:

Nancy, Kansas, US  - A different kind of documentary, pensive, introspective, personal.

Barbara, Beziers, France - Most interesting choice of families, showing the problems for the brides to adjust to an "alien" culture. The reactions of the daughters was very revealing too. Excellent idea for a documentary.

Ernest, Lagos, Nigeria - Very interesting and quite inspiring, these courageous women and their daughters.

Colin, Perth, Australia - Their assimilation was culturally difficult and the expressions of frustration were naturally obvious to the children of the marriages. The fact that the children were able to adapt and progress in their lives was and still is testimony to the dual values of the Japanese and American cultures.

Reinet, Valparaiso, Chile - Interesting but also very sad.

Amujeeb, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia  - The challenges facing them and the struggle period were well documented.

F7GU8 has been accepted to two film festivals! If you happen to be in the ‘hood, please stop by and say hi!

Oct. 25 - Boston Asian-American Film Festival http://baaff.org

Nov. 12-22 - Philadelphia Asian-American Film festival http://phillyasianfilmfest.org

Meanwhile, author Heidi Durrow has just interviewed us for her podcast, “The Mixed Experience.” Our four-way talk is set for release Oct. 19th: http://themixedexperience.com

Speaking of podcasts, Kathryn is traversing the country armed with a digital recorder, scanner and tons of gigabyte space, as she collects hours of oral histories from war brides, their sons and daughters, husbands, relatives and friends. Just a few months into her Vassar College grant-funded project, she has already amassed some amazing personal odysseys, which will eventually be curated onto a dedicated website and add valuable intel to the longer film we would like to produce.

Lucy just presented the film to students at Temple University Japan (and saw the film for the first time on a nice big screen! What a difference…) We are negotiating with distributors in the US and Japan to license our film to universities, and hopefully start to generate a small revenue stream.

You may recall that food was an element in our film - the kitchen scenes signifying a connection with the land of their birth… for Karen, the legacy of mixed parentage manifests in a lifelong love for cooking that draws especially from her Japanese background. Often these recipes have been adapted to the available ingredients, local tastes and whims of wherever her family settled. Karen occasionally writes about food in her blog. Here's a taste: https://kasmauski.wordpress.com/2010/04/

If you have similar stories about how Japanese food has shaped your family’s life in the US - or some interesting hybrid recipes - please share some tasty tidbits with us, at fallsevengetupeight@gmx.com.
