Why the Direct Drive Matters to Your Children
To date, 19% of families have donated to this year’s Direct Drive, and we are
20% to our goal of $145,000.  All contributions, regardless of size, make great things possible at Lawton, including the upcoming Fall Festival with Dance Dude, Music Education and Science Week. Thank you for your support thus far in making Lawton an amazing place to teach and learn. Let’s keep pushing for our goal together as a community. Check out this short video to see many more of the enrichments programs your donation supports!
Every gift matters.

One of the best parts of Lawton is PE. I like PE a lot I like it because I get to be active and have fun with my friends. Rollerblading is my favorite, because I get to zoom around the gym. - Lawton 5th grader

My kids are now more knowledgable about Japan and Peru that I am! World Cultures has made them curious about the world - a mindset that we value tremendously. - Ben Richardson, Lawton Parent

To show that the Lawton enrichment programs matter to you, please turn in your Direct Drive pledge card or  make a gift online today!

Lawton Elementary Curriculum Night Tomorrow 6-8pm

Remember to bring your calendar as this is the time many dates are shared.  Don’t miss out on the opportunity for you to learn about your child’s classroom and what the year will look like for your child. Many teachers also have volunteer sign-ups available for parents to indicate if they would like to volunteer in the classroom or for class special events. This is an adult only event with no childcare available. Classrooms will offer two sessions in order to give families with multiple children an opportunity to visit each room. The Curriculum Night schedule does not include time to individually meet with each teacher, please make a separate appointment with you child's teacher if you would like to discuss your child's needs. Curriculum night is a night to learn about what The session times are as follows:

  • 6:00 – 6:30 – Session 1
  • 6:45 – 7:15 – Session 2
Note: Mr. Hubbard, Mr. Swartzman, and Mrs. Ulmer's classes (5th Grade and 4/5 Split Classes) will have Curriculum Night on TUESDAY October 20th 6-7pm. This will enable all the teachers to be there, meet you, and speak to what your kids will be learning this year.

Veteran's Day Assembly Volunteers Needed
Help us honor our Lawton Family Veterans at our Veteran's Day Assembly on Thursday, November 12. Please contact Kelsey Fatland at kffatland@seattleschools.org if you are interested in helping collect photos, scan and/or upload them and organize a slide show as a way for us to pay tribute to the many honorable veterans in our Lawton community.
FERPA Form Additional Options
Seattle Public Schools has revised our notification of rights under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to allow parents and guardians more choices on how and where you would like your child’s personal information shared. If you already sent in the earlier FERPA form this school year and your choices remain the same, you do not need to return the revised form. Choices made on this year’s previous form will not change until you complete and submit a revised form. If you have already returned a form this year and do not want to change your options, or do not wish to consent to the options offered, you do not need to return the revised form. If you chose Option B-No Release of Information, but still would like your child to participate in activities such as the yearbook, class photo, or in any of the other options listed in the Option B section, complete the revised form and return it to your school by Oct. 10. If you do not check one of the boxes on the form or do not return any FERPA form, SPS will consider the lack of response as consent to release directory information about your child. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Public Affairs at publicaffairs@seattleschools.org or 206-252-0204 (Office of Public Affairs)

Lawton Art Docent Program Still Seeking Volunteers
Thank you to the many volunteers who have already stepped up to join this year’s Lawton Art Docent Program! Additional volunteers are still needed, especially in these classrooms: Hatley, Armstrong, Bakker, Hylton, and Fatland.

You don’t need to be an artist to volunteer as a docent – all you need is your time and interest in art! Docents lead one art lesson per month (from October to June) in the classroom of their choice, using provided straightforward curriculum and materials.
Docents lead lessons alone or with a partner, and with the support of the classroom teacher. Docents work with teachers to set the schedule.

A docent training session will be held on the evening of Thursday October 15 at Lawton. To volunteer or ask a question, please contact tracy.pozil@comcast.net
The Lawton Art Docent Program is a volunteer-led program designed to bring more art into the classroom and enhances the art education offered by our teachers and PTA arts enrichment programs. Each month, the program exposes our students to a wide variety of artists, periods, techniques and art through lessons, history and hands-on art making. The program curriculum is thoughtfully designed to teach students art appreciation and to build on artistic skills at each grade level. The Lawton Art Docent Program is made possible by ardent volunteers and funding by the Lawton PTA.

The Playground Committee Needs You!
The Playground Committee is looking for one volunteer to assist this coming school year:  Time commitment varies, however meetings are typically held the Tuesday of each week at 7p in Magnolia Village.

Grant Writer: You do not have to be an experienced grant writer! Two Grants have already been written, we need someone to take the “meat” of the information, and tweak it to be relevant for new grants we go after. This is an extremely important role, we can’t get to the finish line without this role!

A portion of our fundraising comes from matching volunteer hours, not only are these two roles critical to the success of this project, they are worth important volunteer hours!
Any questions, please contact Kathryn Ficarra.
