Research IT Services News

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the new-look Research IT Services (RITS) newsletter. We’ll be producing these at least once every term going forwards, with news of key developments and sharing some of our future plans. We hope you’ll find them both informative and interesting.
For many of us at UCL the summer months are generally spent planning, and the RITS team are no exception. Communication and engagement – with you and your colleagues, and in both directions – is something we’ve been reflecting on and this newsletter is just one of a number of new initiatives that we’ll be working on in the months to come to enhance this. We’d welcome any thoughts you have on this critical area of our activity, whether at Faculty, Dept., PI or any other level. Contact our Facilitation team, Jo Lampard and Dr Tom Couch at rits@ucl.ac.uk to let us know what you want more of (or less of) in terms of communication.
I hope you’ll also be able to take a few minutes to browse our websites which are undergoing a refresh: Our pages on the ISD website are focussed on the practical needs of visitors from within UCL (what services are available, how to access them, how to get help etc.), whilst our own UCL site serves as a showcase for non-UCL visitors, and offers a broader view of what we do.
Another area of increased focus for us is training. We’ve enjoyed meeting all 91 of you who attended one or more of our training events last year (all of which were fully booked), and we are thinking about how we can expand both the range and frequency of the training events we offer, complementing these with more online resources. More news on these developments next time.
Of course we also continue to develop our core technical services and applications, with a number of capital projects and ‘operational’ development activities currently in hand. Some highlights from across the range of our services are included in this term’s newsletter. As some of these draw to a close we are starting to think about plans for next year, and beyond. A key output for this term will be a five year business plan, setting out a future vision for Research IT Services that meets the growing demands of UCL’s world-class research community for innovative and relevant technology-based services and solutions. Tell us about your needs and priorities by emailing rits@ucl.ac.uk.
