CARIM Symposium 2015

The annual CARIM Symposium 2015 will take place on Wednesday November 4. This year’s Robert Reneman lecture, in honour of the institute’s founding Scientific Director, will be given by Professor Stéphane Hatem. Stéphane Hatem is Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the Heart Institute of Pitié-Salpétrière Hospital and director of the Inserm/University Pierre Marie Curie research laboratory (UMRs1166) in Paris. His research activities have been dedicated to understand the molecular and cellular basis of atrial fibrillation. His work had contributed to improve the knowledge on the formation of macromolecular ionic channel complexes, the mechanisms of the atrial fibrosis and more recently the relation between adipose tissue and atrial fibrillation.

Van de Laar Foundation for Scientific Biochemical Research donates € 400.000 to SWOL

The Foundation dr. ir. J.H.J. van de Laar for Scientific Biochemical Research, based in Heerlen, has donated an amount of € 400,000 to the Limburg University Fund/SWOL. With this generous donation and through the addition of third means, the Van de Laar Foundation was established that will support studies on biochemistry of Thrombosis and Hemostasis conducted by the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM). Funds are used to support Van de Laar visiting professor chairs from leading international universities, education on Thrombosis and Hemostasis, and Ph.D. programs. The Limburg University Fund gratefully welcomes the donation by this outside party enabling UM scientists to perform curiosity driven research. With the signing of an agreement between the Foundation dr. ir. J.H.J. van de Laar and Limburg University Fund the Van de Laar Fund was established on August 25, 2015.

SAVE THE DATE: European Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Sept. 28-30. 2016

ECTH 2016 will bring together researchers, scientist, clinicians and other healthcare professionals in the best scientific congress in Europe on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. ECTH 2016 will deliver in-depth content, education and networking opportunities. The three day congress will be held in the heart of the residence of the government of the Netherlands and seat of European legal institutions, The Hague, and will offer hands-on learning, deep product exploration and countless opportunities to connect with the European community of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
ECTH has the ambition to be the biennial premier European scientific conference for Healthcare Professionals, Specialists and Enterprise Researchers, and clinicians treating bleeding and clotting disorders, offering a comprehensive scientific and clinical education across a broad set of current and soon-to-be released studies, new findings, treatments or products.

Who's new?!

My name is Margaux Fontaine, I am 24 years old. I recently started as a

PhD student at the Department of Pathology. I first did a Bachelor in Biotechnology in Liège and I continued with a Master in Biomedical Sciences at Maastricht University. In my last year of Master, I did an internship in Cardiology and I developed a particular interest in the cardiovascular field. For the next 4 years, I will be working, together with Prof. Erik Biessen, on screening new adipokine and lipid biomarkers in obesity-related cardiovascular disease and functionally interrogate the causality of the biomarker in disease development.

My name is Ben Hermans. I studied Technical Medicine at the University of Twente. Recently I finished my graduation project in Maastricht and in September I started as a PhD student at the Department of Biomedical Engineering in cooperation with the hospital’s Cardiology department. During my PhD, I will focus on the electromechanical interplay during atrial fibrillation, on noninvasive mechanical as well as on invasive electrophysiological mapping techniques for atrial fibrillation. Together with my supervisors (Prof. Delhaas and Dr Pison) I will analyse, test and hopefully improve currently existing and new mechanical and electrophysiological mapping techniques.
