Welcome and Orientation Session
Meet your fellow study tour attendees and local leaders for an introduction to the past, present, and future of Toronto’s urban parks. The session will include an overview of Toronto’s park system and presentations from Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, Toronto Park People, and Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation on projects like Downsview Park and Rouge National Park, and an itinerary review from City Parks Alliance that will establish learning objectives for the tour.
Tour of Regent Park and Projects on Toronto’s Waterfront
For an in-depth look at how the city and its partners are addressing growth, housing affordability, and access issues by bringing green space to underserved communities, participants will visit Regent Park, a new six-acre park at the core of a redevelopment project in Canada’s largest public housing community. The study tour will continue on to Toronto’s waterfront, which is currently undergoing a 25-year revitalization and redevelopment effort. The largest waterfront revitalization of its kind in the world, attendees will stop at Underpass Park, Corktown Commons, and Sugar Beach, as well as undeveloped sites to learn about stormwater and flood management, reclaiming brownfields, and weaving parks into existing urban infrastructure. The day will end with a ferry ride and tour of Toronto Island, home to the largest urban car-free community in North America. |
