A Note from the Project Lead

Since our last communication, the Secure Societies, Food and Agriculture and Transport workshops were carried out in Brussels, Paris and Bordeuax, respectively. The Inclusive and Reflexive Societies workshop, collocated with the European Data Forum in Luxembourg City, will close the first round of BigDataEurope workshops in November. In addition to the physical workshops, we have started remote stakeholder engagement activities in the form of a series of informative Online Hangouts; more are scheduled for the coming months!

Activities within the seven established W3C societal interest groups are now focussing on the selection of partner pilots for each domain.

At least seven partners will have the privileges and responsibilities associated with being official BigDataEurope pilot partners, and be at the forefront of our research and technology efforts. If you think you might have missed this opportunity, you might still get lucky - please contact your domain's representative as soon as possible.

Following the various workshops, interviews, surveys and other discussions with the communities, the consortium has now enough information to start fine-tuning the Big Data platform's architecture. In the coming project phase, we will shift from the 'what' to the 'how'; to identify the best means for addressing the requirements identified so far. Stakeholder activities, driven by the pilot partners, will remain central to these efforts.

Big Data in Security: Two pilots on the start

The 1st workshop on Big Data in Secure Societies, organised by the SatCen in the framework of the BigDataEurope project, was held in Brussels on the 30th of September. The aim of the workshop was to discuss Big Data needs, requirements and use cases in the security domain, thus contributing to the building of a Security Community through interactive sessions with the audience. The workshop was a success with 45 people coming from the European Commission (DG CNECT, DG HOME, DG GROW, DG RTD), JRC, EDA, EUROPOL, Frontex, ESA, DLR, CDTI, ASD-EUROSPACE, EARSC and a number of other entities and private companies covering the domains of Space and Security, Fight against Crime and Cybersecurity. Keynote speeches were delivered by representatives from the European Commission and EUROPOL-EC3 as well as by the BigDataEurope Project Coordinator and the Secure Societies Domain Leader.

Consultation, information and strategic planning.
The first year of the BDE workshop series.

Our open for all workshops provide key opportunities for stakeholders in the specific sector to influence the design of BigDataEurope’s big data platform and enjoy the benefits that the platform will deliver. Often, these workshops are the starting point for sector-specific community groups that seek to develop the use and benefit of Big Data further.

Big Data in Building Energy Management

As the BEMS market grows day by day, so is the need to gather, control, and interpret all the collected data. BEMS are part of the big data market since, although the data they gather is conventionally stand-alone, through today's networking they enable better ways to manage energy and measure buildings and their portfolios.

The Online Hangouts of BDE

The last month brought together experts and potential users of Big Data Technologies throughout Europe to give a voice and a face to the developments and discussions. Over 300 stakeholders took the opportunity to be part of a community process that allows the exchange of pioneers, practitioners, opinion leaders, providers and demanders. This community will now contribute to shaping Europe'e Big Data Future. Beside the workshop series and the online forums we've started remote stakeholder engagement via a series of Online Webinars.
