Downtown Revitalization process continues in Coboconk/Norland, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay and Omemee

Merchants, property owners, residents, visitors, community organizations and local government all benefit from a healthy, vibrant downtown.  Downtown revitalization focuses on managing and improving on the economic, physical and social well-being of a community's traditional town centre by:

  • Strengthening local businesses and encouraging investment by building and property owners
  • Creating enjoyable public streets and spaces, animated by a variety of creative and civic activities
  • Providing work and living opportunities for residents

In partnership with OMAFRA (the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs), downtown revitalization projects are moving forward in each of the designated communities.  Committees have been formed to assist with steering the process and are currently analyzing demographic, household, and business information for their respective Trade Areas.  This involves verifying data and identifying opportunities based on provincial stats as well as through customer origin surveys which were administered in each community.

Consultants, after receiving feedback from each community at design workshops, have been working on Streetscape and Façade Design Guidelines which have been presented to each of the Committees for feedback and are scheduled to go to Council on November 24th for approvla. As well, downtown business owner surveys are being conducted in Lindsay with the help of 20 volunteers, forming 10 teams, with the goal of completing 80 surveys by the end of November.

Water Innovation Update

The City of Kawartha Lakes WRAIN project is helping facilitate two demonstration projects at the Lindsay Wastewater Treatment and Pollution Control Plant. Collaborative efforts between public works, economic development, and the Ontario Clean Water Agency have enabled new wastewater treatment technology from H2Flow and Noble Purification to be tested in Kawartha Lakes. The demonstration projects will test new technology and aim to increase the efficiency with which wastewater is treated. An overview of the new technology can be found on www.wrain.ca
The City of Kawartha Lakes Cultural Maps

The City of Kawartha Lakes Cultural Maps are now live online. The Cultural Maps provide a comprehensive snapshot of our local cultural resources and assets –761 in total. Also included are driving tour maps and the Our Stories map. You are invited to add a story or send us your comments through the “Your Input” tab.
The maps can be accessed directly by keying in the following address: http://www.advantagekawarthalakes.ca/en/keySectors/Cultural--Maps.asp, or by going to the City’s Economic Development Advantage Kawartha Lakes website, selecting key sectors, hovering over Arts, Culture and Heritage and choosing Cultural Maps.
