The leaves are nearly gone, the weather is mild, and Reaching Out with English is well underway. We're thankful for a beautiful autumn; it sure beats Snowtember last year! Enjoy our latest news and updates, we look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.

Be Not Overwhelmed

By Dale Fisher

Two weeks ago, I was listening to several excellent speakers at our Reaching Out With English course. I was inspired by the content and the well thought out presentations. But I also sensed that some of the participants were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information and the realization of how much in involved in teaching a language. I wanted to say, “Be not overwhelmed”. We needn’t feel inadequate to teach content, grammar, or pronunciation... Read More

Upcoming ATESL Meeting

ATESL is pleased to present a three-hour evening session on Monday, November 2 with  Dr. Jane Willis, a specialist in TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching). The session is free of charge, and everyone is welcome. We hope to get a big crowd out for this unique opportunity!

After the task, what then? From meaning to form in task-based language teaching
So your learners have completed their tasks and presented their results to the class. How should this reporting stage be handled? What kind of feedback is appropriate? What activities should follow? This session will explore the post-task stage of a lesson in depth. For the first half of the evening, we will explore meaning-focused post-task activities. During the second half, we will shift our focus to form, considering starting points for grammar-based activities.

Participants are encouraged to bring examples of tasks and texts they have used in their classes. If available, short recordings of their learners performing the tasks would be useful. Jane will share ideas she has gathered from teachers around the world, and participants will leave with a repertoire of post-task activities to take back to their classrooms.

Monday, November 2
6:00-9:00 pm
SAIT, room NN105, on the main floor of the Senator Burns Building

Please RSVP to calgary@atesl.ca by Friday, October 23.

Online Training for ELL Instructors Through Rural Routes

Rural Routes is a provincially supported program whose main purpose is to increase the capacity of rural communities to meet ELL needs. Rural Routes recently rolled out a set of online courses for ELL instructors and tutors.  The good news is that these free courses are now available to urban participants.

Between November 2015 and June 2016, ESL Rural Routes will be offering a selection of online workshops. This provides a broader range of training than might be offered in a particular location. Our introductory ESL Tutor Training workshop will be offered once a month to ensure that new tutors receive training in a timely manner.

Each workshop is 2.5 hours and will be offered on a rotating schedule. Go to the Rural Routes Events page to register.

Teaching Assistant Opportunity with Missionary Couple in Manchay, Peru January 8 - 23, 2016

Notice from Greg Abbot: We are looking for a teacher assistant. Someone who has taken the 30-hour ESL Cooperative Reaching Out with English training. No teaching experience is necessary.

We plan to have 3 teachers and 3 assistants and offer 1 morning and 1 afternoon class.
We plan to teach 120 students in 6 classes with 10 teaching days over two weeks.
Student ages last year ranged from 11 to 63.
Language skills are low beginner to low intermediate.
The curriculum is HIS English from Texas (modified to suit our purposes) and is conversation based.

Manchay is a poverty stricken city on the outskirts of Lima.
We are going under the auspices of the Jack Neufeld Foundation of Calgary. They are implementing their Communities For Life programs in partnership with a local church there.

Learning some English skills leads to immediate employment opportunities in the tourism and service industries in Lima.
Having a second language is now an entrance requirement for University in Peru.

Our budgeted cost is $1,850 per person and we will be fundraising through the Foundation.
We will be lodging in the SEL university residence in Lima and transported by the local pastor.
The weather in Manchay is hot, dry and dusty. Lima is smoggy.
