Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
 Amen.

First Amendment Activist, Mary Beth Tinker, to Speak at BSM

Over the past several years, members of the BSM community have been part of a dialogue regarding students’ rights to freedom of speech. On Thursday, October 22, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Hamburge Theater, activist Mary Beth Tinker will share her thoughts and experiences on this topic.

As a student in Des Moines, Iowa, Tinker decided to wear a black armband to school to protest the Vietnam War. Tinker and her fellow students were suspended for wearing the armbands. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court, and in a landmark decision, it was ruled that students in public schools do have First Amendment rights.

We are honored to have Tinker join us as she marks the 50th anniversary of her courageous demonstration of free speech. Tinker will speak in a session open to the BSM community, student journalists and leaders from local high schools. There is no fee for this event. Following Tinker’s presentation, she will be joined by a panel of local experts from media, communications, and law for a question and answer session.

Please contact junior Josie Ross if you have any questions.

Save-the-Date: Junior High Fall Party

Junior high students are invited to attend the fall party on Friday, October 23, 7:00-9:30 p.m. in the Commons and Great Hall. They will enjoy basketball, dodge ball, ping pong, snacks/drinks and music/dancing. The Junior High Student Council selected a theme of "Halloween Costume Party." So, come dressed in your favorite costume, but remember that it must be appropriate for a school event. Please also keep in mind BSM's simplicity initiative, which means costumes do not need to be extravagant or expensive.

This event is open to BSM students only. Admission is $3, and the student council selected the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to receive donations from the party.

Please visit our Sign Up Genius page if you are able to help chaperone the event or provide donations of pop, candy, snacks or supplies.

Please pick up your students promptly at 9:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact party co-chairs Mary Renk or Jennifer Mills

The counselors are available to you throughout the school year through email, telephone or in person. Click here for contact information.
