David Rogers
learned publishing from the ground up at Llewellyn Publications, a large new age category publisher in St. Paul, MN. He managed three divisions of the company, which meant juggling fast and keeping many balls in the air without dropping any. In his three years at Llewellyn he implemented many successful programs, generating tremendous bottom line results. Careers in media production, serial entrepreneurship, and campaign politics followed. His work with Syngetic Press in Santa Fe garnered a Southwest Book Award for the cover design of “The Wastewater Gardener”, by Mark Nelson.

2015 Hillerman Conference Presenter David Morrell.

David Morrell presents at the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference, Saturday, November 7th:

“Coffee, Croissants, and Critiques”, 7:30 am – 8:45 am – David is one of the mentors.

Writing Tips from
David Morrell

1.To keep a project fresh in your imagination, print each day’s text and read it in a different spot than where you wrote it. After many months on a project, change the font. These shifts in perspective can be revealing.

2. Be a first-rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of another author. If you try to imitate another author’s success, you’ll always be several steps behind, chasing the market instead of leading it.

3. When revising a long work, choose pages at random so that the sentences exist independent of the plot. Scan your eyes down the page. It’s amazing how awkward expressions and repeated words leap out at you. Even scanning the start of each paragraph can expose problems with repetition and awkwardness. As Neil Simon once said, “Even when the writing’s good, it isn’t good.” Take one more look at random pages.
