The 5th Street Unity Bridge in Kaslo was recognized at the recent UBCM conference. The Village of Kaslo won a Community Recognition Award for the bridge from  by Wood Works! BC, a resource to help communities follow the Wood First Act. The Act requires provincially funded buildings to feature wood as the primary construction material withing the BC Building Code.

2016  Indicators Survey - New information
Closing date: November 9, 2015

Indicators Background Paper

Remember that our goal is for 100% participation from each CFA that has operated for at least one fiscal year. Please make time to complete the survey before November 9th. In addition to questions on the 18 Indicators, there are questions that target areas of the BCCFA Strategic Plan. All BCCFA members are invited to fill whatever questions they can in the "BCCFA Members Information" section. Your responses will help to focus our work and clarify advocacy efforts for the success of community forests in BC.

Clarification on Indicator #1 on Jobs
Survey Question #7 asks: What is the approximate number of people who DIRECTLY come in contact with your wood or tenure and derive some or all of their annual income as a direct result of the community forest harvest? Some of you have asked if this count should include the major mill or pulp mill where you sell logs. To clarify, we want to determine the impact of community forest logs on local jobs. In making this calculation, you will include the one man Wood Mizer operator who buys one load of your wood, for example, or the other local operators who buy 3 or 4 loads a year. The job numbers from your local log home builder who buys your logs would count. There is a multiplier formula available should we want to calculate m3 to job ratios at the primary manufacturers.

  • Do you want to see all of the questions before starting the survey on line? Click here for a PDF of the survey
  • Your stories are still very important. There is space to tell a story of how your community forest is demonstrating each indicator. Call Susan if you would like to just tell a story to her for write up! We also need your photos. Contact Susan if you have photos to share.
  • Dave Gill from Westbank developed a spreadsheet to collect the data necessary to respond to the survey. You may need to tweak it for your own purposes, but it is a useful tool to get you started. link to the spreadsheet
  • Don Brown with Ecora, has offered to provide assistance in survey completion. Don has volunteered to help with the survey and may be contacting you as the deadline gets close if you have not yet completed the survey. Are you interested in the UBC Summer Student Program?
Expressions of Interest are now invited for four undergraduate internships to be placed at two community forests in the summer of 2016. We recently have learned that funding has been confirmed for 3 years which will allow for a longer notice of the opportunity to participate in the program. Meanwhile the deadline for this year is November 20th so that communities will have a broader selection of students to choose from. BCCFA members interested in participating in the program are asked to provide a proposal to Tony Loring Co-op Coordinator at UBC Faculty of Forestry. read more

Westbank First Nation is Rebranding
According to Dave Gill, manager of the The Westbank Community Forest, the community forest will now be managed by Ntityix Resources LP (formerly Heartland Economics LP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Westbank First Nation (WFN) responsible for all of WFN’s forestry holdings. The new brand links the current day life and economy of the WFN with their cultural history and language.  Ntityix - Chief Spring Salmon -  is one of a consortium of companies reporting to the Westbank First Nation Development Company Ltd. read more
