We turned 38!
It was our birthday this month - 38 years of independent publishing! And we got a nice shout out which we will call a birthday present. Recently Geist magazine published a review of Worth Fighting For: Canada's Tradition of War Resistance from 1812 to the War on Terror (see below) and the reviewer, Daniel Francis, wrote:
"(Let me add parenthetically that the Toronto publisher Between the Lines has made itself one of the most interesting book publishers in the country. BTL publishes non-fiction about a wide range of social and cultural issues, including Aboriginal affairs, labour, environmentalism and many aspects of Canadian history. Their books are timely, provocative and, unlike most of our academic presses, actually readable. Long may they prosper.) "
Thanks!

Success!
Understanding Jim Crow
Using Racist Memorabilia to Teach Tolerance and Promote Social Justice
By David Pilgrim
Last month we promoted a Kickstarter campaign for Understanding Jim Crow and we are happy to report that it was a great success. We will have copies available the first week of November.
Understanding Jim Crow introduces readers to the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, a collection of more than ten thousand contemptible collectibles that are used to engage visitors in intense and intelligent discussions about race, race relations, and racism. The items are offensive. They were meant to be offensive. The items in the Jim Crow Museum served to dehumanize blacks and legitimized patterns of prejudice, discrimination, and segregation.
Using racist objects as teaching tools seems counterintuitive—and, quite frankly, risky. Many people are already apprehensive discussing race relations, especially in settings where their ideas are challenged. The museum and this book exist to help overcome our collective trepidation and reluctance to talk about race.

Globalization: Buying and Selling the World
A No-Nonsense Guide
by Wayne Ellwood
Globalization has an ever-increasing effect on our lives. It has made the world smaller and brought us closer together yet it can also make us more vulnerable and divided. The deregulation of finance and banking and the crisis they led to is a devastating example of the knock-on effects of globalization.
This fully revised fourth edition reviews the history and complexities of globalization, examining the forces in play and whose interests they serve. And while the global exchange of people, products, plants, animals, technologies, and ideas intensifies the key question that Wayne Ellwood asks ‘how can globalization be a positive force for change?’

International Development: Illusions and realities
A No-Nonsense Guide
By Maggie Black
The idea of reducing poverty and inequality and improving health, education, and job opportunities around the world is beyond criticism. Yet, the reality of development can often be confusion, contradiction, deceit, and corruption.
This fully updated third edition makes a major contribution to the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of aid and development. Drawing on a wide range of sources, from international studies to personal stories, Maggie Black brings objective analysis and valuable insights to all the key themes. And she presents a forceful argument for bringing the poor and marginalised into the heart of the process.

The Money Crisis: How bankers grabbed our money - and how we can get it back
A No-Nonsense Guide
By Peter Stalker
What exactly is money and what does it do? We might understand coins, notes, and gold bars but do we understand credit default swaps and sovereign wealth funds? In responding to these questions with concise historical analysis and demystifying language, Peter Stalker exposes the flaws in the system that led to financial crisis.
He reveals that this is not just a banking crisis, it is a crisis of money. A combination of deregulation, incompetence, and greed create the conditions for boom and bust. This concise book provides an understanding of these factors and the strategies that can take them out of the equation, so that ordinary people can regain control of money.

Renewable Energy: Cleaner, fairer ways to power the planet
A No-Nonsense Guide
By Danny Chivers
Few people doubt the threat of climate change and the urgent need to conquer fossil fuel addiction. But can renewable sources of energy ever be sufficient to provide modern societies with a decent quality of life? This book is clear. They can. And it outlines the strategies to break the barriers to a 100% renewable world.
Danny Chivers presents a compelling introduction to renewable technologies for non-technical readers (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and ambient heat, wave and tidal, fuel crops, and energy from waste) and a roadmap to powering the world, not just sustainably, but democratically.

BTL book reviews
Geist magazine says that the essays in Worth Fighting For "show that resistance is not marginal to Canadian history, rather it is central to the development of Canadian democracy."
Intotemak says of A Line in the Tar Sands "I commend this book to all who are interested in more hopeful narratives than the ones that we so often uncritically adopt, the ones that are manufactured for our consumption by those who stand to profit must from them."
