What has your experience with interpreters been like?
 

If you’ve used Interpreting New Zealand interpreters, you will have had the opportunity to comment about their performance in the annual evaluation we conduct.  But that’s specific to particular jobs and individual interpreters.  Colleagues of ours at AUT and Massey Universities are doing a project on the ethical conduct of interpreters and they would like to invite you to participate in a survey of interpreter users.   The researchers are seeking to find out what happens in the real world – out of the classroom and out of sight of management.  You’ll find detailed information and a link to the survey here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Users_of_Interpreting_Services


Recognition of Interpreting NZ’s Introductory training and assessment

This year, we’ve reached a significant milestone in having our introductory training and assessment recognised by the NZ Society of Translators & Interpreters (NZSTI).  We jointly sponsored eight interpreters to sit the Australian NAATI (National Accreditation Agency for Translators & Interpreters) paraprofessional exam, and all seven who have received their results so far have passed – this is beyond the 75% success rate we had to achieve.  NZSTI’s membership criteria have to date prevented our interpreters joining, but that has now changed.  It’s a great result for us, and we’re pleased to have our focus on training finally formally acknowledged.  If you would like to check out NZSTI’s official letter to us, you can find it here.
 

Starting operations in Auckland

After nearly 23 years in Wellington, and 8 in Christchurch, we have taken our first steps to start operating in Auckland.  We are mid-way through our first Introductory Interpreting course there, and hope to add some new languages to the small number that we currently have available on-site.  We have a part-time administrator, Agnes Terraschke, helping us out, and hope to appoint a permanent coordinator early in 2016.  We’re co-located with Auckland Regional Migrant Services at 582 Mt Albert Road, Three Kings.

request@interpret.org.nz .  A list of languages available on-site in Auckland is here , but if you’re not sure, please ask – more will be added as we train more people.
