MSF, 13 October 2015 A New MSF Emergency Project in Maiduguri
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has been working at Umaru Shehu Hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno State, since September 28. The hospital, which treats patients referred from smaller health facilities, also provides care to people wounded during attacks. At the hospital, an MSF doctor and nurse provide support and relief to Ministry of Health teams working night and day in the 11-bed emergency room. Between September 28 and October 3, 134 patients were admitted to the department for emergency medical and surgical care.

All over the world, October is the breast cancer awareness month and the 5th day in the month is the Go Pink Day. Pink is the official colour for cancer as red is for HIV/AIDS. In Abuja, dozens of medical personnel, NGOs, cancer patients, government agencies, officials and representatives of corporate organisations, decked in pink or a touch of pink, gathered at the Wuse market to mark the day with free screening and talks on cancer.

The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, has disinfected and decontaminated the accident and emergency unit of the hospital, following an Ebola scare last week. Fifteen staff quarantined have also been released to their families, the hospital management confirmed. While speaking with journalists in Calabar, head of disease control and community health, Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, John Kehinde, said with the disinfection which will last for 72hours before use, the hospital is now free from any kind of Disease.

The fifth national delegates of people living with HIV forum has endorsed Mr Victor Omoshehin as National Coordinator of Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN). This is contained in a statement jointly signed by Mr Charlse Jjuuko, UNAIDS Global Outreach officer, and Omoshehin, the new national coordinator of the network.

The federal health ministry has set new guidelines for malaria, advocacy and social mobilization (ACSM) programmes in a national drive toward a malaria-free country. The guidelines, launched in Abuja on Wednesday, come amidst concern about low uptake and use of malaria interventions like insecticide-treated mosquito nets, artemisinin-combination therapies and adequate diagnosis.

In September 2014, the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone was getting worse by the day. Nigeria had managed to successfully control an outbreak at home, but the rest of the continent was on edge and anxiety was sky high, especially following the few cases that had occurred in the West. Some projections estimated half a million cases before the outbreak would be brought under control. It was in this context that there was a call for volunteers to work on the newly formed African Union Support to the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA).
