Walter Moreau
Executive Director, Foundation Communities
Number of Years as Executive Director: 17 years and counting
How did he become interested in this work?
"After college I was searching for some meaningful way to use my degree in economics. On a trip to Los Angeles I got to spend time on skid row with the SRO Housing Corporation of LA. Meeting residents of their housing was inspirational, and learning about the complex financing lit up my mind. So I returned to Texas with the goal to build supportive housing. I got the housing ‘bug’." Read the full interview!

City of Austin's Task Force on Community Engagement Seeks Your Input
Earlier this year, with direction from Council Member Leslie Pool, City Council formed a new task force to focus on improving citizen engagement in city initiatives, with the goal of enhancing and innovating existing community engagement resources. The Council will be collecting feedback from various stakeholder groups to inform this process. One Voice Central Texas has been selected to represent the human services/basic needs sector within the nonprofit/social service category. The City has asked One Voice members to participate in the following ways:
- Participate in a focus group. As an industry leader, discuss your personal experience and past interactions with the City of Austin. This will include brief questions about the existing tools provided by the City of Austin, and plenty of time for personal examples of what has and has not worked for you. The City wants to know where you see room for improvement and any best practices you have used when working with your own constituents.
- Complete a survey. The City seeks input from all organizational leaders; all One Voice members are encouraged to complete the survey here.
- Distribute a survey to your members and constituents. Another phase will be collecting public feedback regarding the existing tools offered by COA and public opinions about the process as a whole. Distribution of the survey is completely optional, and is not required for participation in the focus group.

Talking Human Services: A Multimedia Report
The National Human Services Assembly has partnered with FrameWorks Institute to explore how various ways of reframing the human services sector could improve public understanding and unite the field around core concepts. They recently released this MessageMemo, which summarizes findings from studies of how Americans view human services – and human well-being – and identifies reframing tools that help the public think about these issues productively. The multimedia version also includes videos that demonstrate the impact of the reframing tools.
