LATIN TEXT:

1.
Adoro te devote, latens Deitas,
Quae sub his figuris, vere latitas:
Tibi se cor meum totum subjicit,
Quia te contemplans totum deficit.

2.
Visus tactus gustus in te falitur,
Sed auditu solo tuto creditur:
Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius:
Nil hoc veritatis verbo verius.

3.
In cruce latebat sola Deitas,
Ad hic latet simul et humanitas:
Ambo tamen credens, atque confitens,
Peto quod petivit latro paenitens.

4.
Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor,
Deum tamen meum te confiteor:
Fac me tibi semper magis credere,
In te spem habere, te diligere.

5.
O memoriale mortis Domini,
Panis vivus vitam praestans homini:
Praesta meae menti de te vivere,
Et te illi semper dulce sapere.

6.
Pie Pelicane, Jesu Domine,
Me immundum munda tuo sanguine,
Cujus una stilla salvum facere
Totum mundum quid ab omni scelere.

7.
Jesu, quem velatum nunc adspicio,
Oro fiat illud quod tam sitio:
Ut, te revelata cernens facie,
Visu sim beatus tuae gloriae.
Amen.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

1.
Hidden God, devoutly I adore Thee,
Truly present underneath these veils:
All my heart subdues itself before Thee,
Since it all before Thee faints and fails.

2.
Not to sight, or taste, or touch be credit,
Hearing only do we trust secure;
I believe, for God the Son hath said it–
Word of Truth that ever shall endure.

3.
On the Cross was veiled Thy Godhead's splendor,
Here Thy manhood lieth hidden too;
Unto both alike my faith I render,
And, as sued the contrite thief, I sue.

4.
Though I look not on Thy wounds with Thomas,
Thee, my Lord, and Thee, my God, I call:
Make me more and more believe Thy promise,
Hope in Thee, and love Thee over all.

5.
O Memorial of my Saviour dying,
Living Bread that givest life to man;
May my soul, its life from Thee supplying,
Taste Thy sweetness, as on earth it can.

6.
Deign, O Jesus, pelican of heaven,
Me, a sinner, in Thy Blood to lave,
To a single drop of which is given
All the world from all its sin to save.

7.
Contemplating Lord, Thy hidden presence,
Grant me what I thirst for and implore,
In the revelation of Thine essence
To behold Thy glory evermore.

Gregorian Chant

For the next two months, you will take a close look at developing and improving your ability to sing in tune, and to sight-sing. This month, you will learn the basics of sight-reading rhythm. Even though the exercises are not in Gregorian chant, this is still a skill that will be used.

Suggested activities:
  1. Do the exercises called "Beats and Bars" (you can give yourself about 2 weeks to try these and practice them)
  2. Do the exercises called "Simple Note Lengths" (another 2 weeks)

(Note: I'm planning to start Words with Wings, a 20-week course in Gregorian chant, in January.)
Extra Listening for Enjoyment:

  • Requiem Aeternum (length 6:07) This is the Introit from the Mass for the Dead. The Gregorian chant for the entire Mass is truly moving. If you have time, listen to In Paradisum as well.

  • Chant Kyriale (CCWatershed) - did you know there are 18 different Gregorian Mass settings?

Connect on the Google+ Community

I started a Google+ community for these studies. This has great potential for being a place to: 1) discuss the music we are learning each month, and 2) share our learning experiences with others. I think it would be helpful if Q&A, interesting facts found, or other helpful information could be easily seen and discussed by all.  Think of it as an online study and support group.

Let's enjoy this learning experience together!

If you are new to Google+,  here's a great tutorial on getting started
