 Aquaculture Happenings

US Trout Farmers Association Conference was held on Sept. 23-26 featuring presentations on aquatic animal health, selective breeding, water quality and regulations as well as a fantastic visit and tour of Rushing Waters Fisheries (photo above). The interactive tour involved demonstrations regarding satiation and feeds to  pond aeration, and a behind the scenes look at a new installation of a partial recirculation system and aquaponics system on the farm. UWSP-NADF presented the Atlantic salmon system at the facility during the conference as well as described the farm's partial recirculation system, inspired by UWSP-NADF's demonstration building.

Wisconsin Aquaculture Association fall meeting was held at the Gollon's Bait and Fish Farm on Sept. 11 discussing the progress of aquaculture in the state with local representatives as well as a very appreciated tour of the incredible farm. The Gollon's farm was founded in 1968 and is currently in its 4th generation of family run aquaculture, managing approximately 50 ponds at their site in Dodgeville, WI. New Facility Staff

Recently this fall, UWSP-NADF has brought on a new Aquaculture Technician, Jared Neibauer (in photo above). Jared has received his Bachelor's in Biology with minor in Geographic Information Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. His past experience includes aquatic invasive species monitoring and is looking to advance his education by gaining real life application of aquaculture at the facility.

Aquaculture technicians receive hands-on experience at the UWSP-NADF; working with both cool and cold water species as well as advanced recirculating aquaculture system technology, ponds, raceways, and larval systems including
bell jar and heath tray incubation systems. Currently at the facility, staff are working directly with 8 different aquaculture species including Arctic char, Atlantic salmon, lake trout, rainbow trout, yellow perch, walleye, saugeye, sauger and lake sturgeon.

Aquaculture North America Features UWSP-NADF
  • Profitable commercial production for walleye and saugeye has been researched at the facility for many years. Indoor larval tank rearing systems have been demonstrated in Iowa for some time, but now the UWSP-NADF is using heated recycle water systems for faster grow out....Read On

Classroom Aquaponics

UWSP-NADF has been closely working with its local communities of Ashland, Bayfield, and as of last year, Washburn high schools to incorporate aquaponics into their curriculum. The facility has provided technical assistance, materials and fish to these systems each year. Photo above shows Facility Manager, Greg Fischer (left), and Washburn's new science teacher, Sean Augustyn (right) starting up the schools aquaponics system for the year with yellow perch donated by the facility.

Bayfield's Aquaponics System created by Dave Doering's Technology Education Class.

This year, UWSP-NADF is also leasing out three dissolved oxygen meters for the students to monitor and learn about the importance of the water quality in their systems.
