Mr. Ethics - October 2015

Dear Mr. Ethics,
I have recently graduated from engineering college.  I was hired by a great mechanical engineering firm.  I regularly attend project presentations with the senior staff.  One particular senior member is a great guy who probably knows more than I ever will.  My problem is that when we do our presentations he never corrects the potential client when they refer to him as a PE.  He never graduated from college and never even sat for the PE.   I think he is acting unethically.  Should l discuss this with my boss?

Regards, EIT

Dear EIT,

I am not sure if I have enough information to give you a clear answer.  There are many people in the industry that came up in a time when a college engineering degree or PE defined their talent.  So long as the company reviewed and accepted their work as their own there is no issue.  If the individual is specifically representing themselves as a PE then there is a definite issue.  My recommendation would be to talk to your boss about what you can say or not say as an EIT in a meeting.  Ask him if you have to correct someone who may think you are a PE and how the company wants you to do same.  Hear what your boss has to say and then decide if the other employee’s actions remain troubling to you.

Regards, Mr. Ethics.

AIC Constructor Certification Commission Call for Nominations

The Constructor Certification Commission is currently accepting nominations to fill one elected position on its Board of Governors to help lead the organization dedicated to developing and maintaining the AIC’s Associate Constructor and Certified Professional Constructor certification programs.  The CCC is a semi-autonomous Board that operates independently from the normal AIC Committee Structure, allowing it to make independent decisions regarding the Constructor Certification program.  Nominees must be a Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) in good standing, but not necessarily a member of the AIC.

There are many benefits to serving on the CCC Board of Governors, such as;

  1. Ability to shape the future of a nationally recognized construction certification program.
  2. Industry recognition by serving on a national Board of Governors.
  3. Collaborating with both industry and academic professionals with a shared interest.
  4. Ability to enhance both the value of AIC and Constructor Certification.

This position carries a 4 year term of office and includes a requirement to attend monthly teleconferences to discuss the on-going needs of the Commission.  In addition, the Commission meets twice per year in person at the AIC Mid-Year Meeting each Fall and the AIC Annual Forum in the Spring.  The new Governor will be installed at the Annual Forum in February 2016 in San Diego, CA.

Nomination and Election Process

CPC’s who are interested in this position should submit a letter of interest to info@professionalconstructor.org.  Nomination letters should indicate your desire to serve on the Board of Governors and any relevant experience that would lend itself well to service on the Board.  Please include a bio and/or resume with your letter.  Only CPC’s in good standing are eligible to participate in the election.

Nomination Timeline:

September 24, 2015 – Call for Nominations Issued

October 31, 2015 – Nominations Due

November 6, 2015 – Ballot Issued

December 6, 2015 – Ballot Closed

December 31, 2015 – Results Released

Questions? Contact Joe Sapp at joe@professionalconstructor.org.  If you are an Associate Constructor (AC) and have an interest in participating for the Commission please contact Joe Sapp as well.  The Commission is currently investigating the formation of a new AC Advisory Task Force to provide input to the Board of Governors on issues affecting ACs.
