Gotta Be Good Tour Comes to Rochester: 10/22

SPARK Entrepreneurs is hosting the Gotta Be Good Tour on Thursday, October 22 at 2 p.m. in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons. The tour brings leaders from business, academia, startups, social work, and beyond to share their unique stories and insights with audiences that care about making an impact. This free event is open to anyone. The tour visits over a dozen college campuses, coworking spaces, and startup incubators each year.


Warner Entrepreneurship Course Now Open to All Students

Learn about EDU 446: Entrepreneurial Skills for Educators, a spring semester Warner School course now open to graduate and undergraduate students from all schools and colleges, at an info session on Tuesday, October 27 at 3:45 p.m. in LeChase Hall, room 141. Assistant Professor David Miller will present on the 3-credit hybrid-online course. Several students who have taken the course in prior semesters will be on-hand to answer questions and offer authentic insights into what to expect from this course. Refreshments will be provided. Entrepreneur-in-Residence Office Hours: 10/21 - 22

Need advice on launching a new venture? Schedule an appointment with the Ain Center's Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs). John Hawkins, vice president of Paramax Corp. and president of Benchview Management Corp., will hold office hours on Wednesday, October 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Carol Simon Hall on River Campus. John has expertise in service and technology industries, strategic growth, and investment banking. Michael Wohl, associate director of social entrepreneurship and managing partner of Greenspace Capital, will hold office hours on Thursday, October 22 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. also in Carol Simon Hall. Appointments are required and can be scheduled using our online booking system: book with John Hawkins or book with Michael Wohl; or by calling 276-3500.


TEAM Master's Program General Information Session: 10/21

Learn about the master of science program in technical entrepreneurship and management (TEAM) at a general information session on Wednesday, October 21 at 4 p.m. in the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship Conference Room, 1-211 Carol Simon Hall. TEAM students take half of their courses in one of nine technical concentrations and half in specialized business courses at the Simon School. The session is hosted by Andrea Galati, executive director of the TEAM program. University students qualify for merit-based scholarship opportunities. KEY Program Application Deadline: 11/2

The fall application deadline for the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program is 5 p.m. Monday, November 2. Applications should be dropped off to Lattimore 312. Seniors will only be permitted to apply during the fall semester. For more information, contact the KEY program administrator at hillary.tatar@rochester.edu.


UR Community: Apply to the NSF I-Corps Site Training and Grant Program

Got a technical business idea? Students at any level of study, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to apply to Cohort II of the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Site program at the University of Rochester. The program provides entrepreneurial training (two required workshops and biweekly meetings) and modest funding ($1,000 to $3,000 grant awards) to enable teams to transition their technical idea into the marketplace. Cohort II will take place during the 2016 spring semester. The application, including an Itemized Financial Plan on how the funds will be used, are due Monday, November 16 at noon via email to Matthew Spielmann. Rochester Venture Adventure: 10/17

Rochester Venture Adventure is a race/scavenger hunt that will showcase the catalytic change going on in downtown Rochester’s Innovation district in a unique and fun experience. This exciting event will focus on local businesses, groups and change agents seeking to revitalize downtown. The not-for-profit, standalone race will send participants on a 2-hour adventure showcasing future downtown hot spots that will contribute to increasing the quality of life in our city. Participants will race to find clues, solve puzzles and complete tasks. Prizes will be awarded not only for speed of completion but also for enthusiasm and creative participation. The 21+ event kicks off on Saturday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. in St. Joseph's Park. Register online.

Buffalo Startup Weekend: 10/23 - 10/25

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. Physicist and String Theorist Dr. Brian Greene Delivers Talk: 10/27

A NEXUS-NY Clean Energy event will feature Dr. Brian Greene, physicist, string theorist and author of The Elegant Universe, on Tuesday, October 27 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Ave. in Rochester. He will speak on The Drive to Innovate: Stories from the Frontiers of Discovery. Register online. Student tickets are available for $10.
