PTA President Notes

October 18, 2015

Hey Presidents...

Happy Sunday!

Thank you to everyone who made it to the Superintendent Coffee! Attendance was a little light, but ok. We're going to keep the dates and times as they are for now. We met Tanisha Felder, our brand new Director of Equity and Family Engagement (yay!). Michael Power shared assessment data, interrupted once by the annual earthquake drill (which Chuck Goodwin "walked" us through). Wrapping up was an update on ELL programs from Dr Ellen Kaje, including information on a bilingual program that the District is researching.

Something to note: at the next Council meeting, we will be joined by the Seattle Times Education Lab's Linda Shaw and Anika Anand. If you would like to invite your Legislative Chairs, newsletter editors, or any of the rest of your Boards, they are welcome and encouraged to come.

Standards of Affiliation

Don't forget that this is due October 31! Here's the form...

And a reminder that if you do everything on this form and keep all the documentation in one place, you're in great shape to apply for one of the State Group Awards :

I think you can click this picture and get to the webpage, but it is password-protected because it's in the Leadership pages. If you can't get there, log into the Leadership Resources, find WSPTA Awards, and then Group Award Forms.

From the Trenches

In order for your PTA to run smoothly as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Washington, there are a few very important things to remember. And to be a PTA working well in concert with the school/ASB and other outside groups, there are other things as well.

Please make sure your Treasurers are attending Money Matters classes when they are offered. Please make sure they have access to the handbook, which is in the Leadership Resources: http://www.wastatepta.org/leadership/leadership_guide/2015-2016/HB_Treasurer_9%2011%2015.pdf

And please make sure someone takes PTA & the Law as early in the year as possible.

This came up recently, so just a reminder... In Section 2.2 of Money Matters, you'll find this:
PTA funds must:
• Never be deposited into the personal account of the treasurer or anyone else.
• Never be deposited into a school bank account.
• Never be deposited into the bank account of another organization.
• Never be placed into a safe belonging to a school.
• Never be kept in someone’s home.
This will be true for anything of value - blank checks, gift cards, cash, checks, etc. Cash boxes cannot be left unsupervised in a school office - even if it contains only checks made out to your PTA.

These rules are in place to protect everyone. It's why we double count, double sign, provide receipts, and keep school and PTA funds separate. There are no PTA police, but there are stories of things going wrong - don't become a story!!

Tax Workshops!!

Remind your treasurers about the November 15 tax deadline, and make sure they know about this workshop if they need it. Most PTAs should be able to file the electronic postcard. If you're not in that category, make sure your treasurer is confident!

Trouble with figures that don’t seem to ‘fit’ anywhere? Confused by IRS-Speak? Just for you! Help with your 990EZ Tax Form!

Wednesday, October 21, 6:00 to 9:00 PM
LWSD Resource Center (Lake WA District Office, 16250 NE 74th St., Redmond WA 98052)

Please RSVP to wendydelong@comcast.net

Format:
1. A line by line overview of the 2014 990EZ
2. Time for individual questions

What to bring:
1. A scratch copy of your 2014 Form 990EZ, including Schedule A
2. A copy of your 2014-2015 year-end financial report
3. Any other necessary reference information from your records
4. Pen/pencil and a tablet or paper for taking notes

For best results: You will get more from this workshop if you have first attempted to complete your tax form and have taken time to formulate specific questions that you need to have answered.

Hospitality: Since the sessions run long, fee free to brown-bag it or grab fast food on your way to eat during class. There are Coke and snack vending machines in the lobby. Bottled water will be available.

Find the flyer here. This counts as training!!

The Spiritual Child: New Science On Parenting To Thrive (Parent Map)

Lecture with Lisa Miller, Ph.D.

Lisa Miller, Ph.D., researcher and clinical psychologist, presents the next big idea in psychology: the science and the power of spirituality. Gain practical advice and concrete ways to develop and encourage your child’s well-being.

Based on her New York Times bestselling book, The Spiritual ChildMiller presents the clear, scientific link between spirituality and health and shows that children who have a positive, active relationship to spirituality:

  • Are 40% less likely to use and abuse substances
  • Are 60% less likely to be depressed as teenagers
  • Are 80% less likely to have dangerous or unprotected sex
  • Have significantly more positive markers for thriving including an increased sense of meaning and purpose, and high levels of academic success.

Combining cutting-edge research with broad anecdotal evidence from her work as a clinical psychologist to illustrate just how invaluable spirituality is to a child's mental and physical health, Miller translates these findings into practical advice for parents, giving them concrete ways to develop and encourage their children's-as well as their own-well-being. In this provocative, conversation-starting book, Miller presents us with a pioneering new way to think about parenting our modern youth.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
Hello Friend of the Family Support Department at Center for Human Services,

As a leader in your neighborhood, I wanted to share with you an opportunity for adults who live or work in the City of Shoreline.

The City of Shoreline is sponsoring 2 free trainings in Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health challenges in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and most importantly – teaches individuals how to help a youth in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.

There are two dates to choose from, November 7th or December 7th.

Please help me spread the word about this free training opportunity.  It is a great training for anyone who cares for or works with youth:  parents, teachers, youth group leaders, coaches, aunts, uncles & grandparents!

To register, contact Tanya at 206-631-8836 or tanya@chs-nw.org
