Congratulations to our own Tom Riley whose article "Rescue of Lambs by the Shepherd" was the cover story in last Sunday's Standard adult Sunday School paper from Nazarene Publishing House.

A memorial service for Lynn Pitts will be held Friday, October 23 at 2:00pm in Heritage Chapel.  Lynn passed away on September 11 and is greatly missed.   Lynn moved to Nashville in 2011 and was an active member of NFCN and the Victory Sunday School class.

Wednesday, October 14 was an important day in the life of the church. The papers for the closing of the sale of the property on Fifth Street, between Woodland and Russell, were signed in the church conference room.  Shown in the picture is Secretary of the Church Board, Gerald Quick.

FLIRTING WITH FIASCOS

I sat in the massive crowd of over 900 at the annual fund raising luncheon for The Next Door Christian nonprofit a few days ago, listening intently to our own Amanda Dunlap's presentation on how their ministry helps women coming out of alcohol and drug addiction and other life altering issues.  I began to think about how many organizations among the 25,000 nonprofits in middle Tennessee are focused on helping people out of these enslavements.  I sat in our conference room this week discussing with community leaders the need for more church based ministries focusing on this same issue. Never have the consequences of addictive substances and behaviors sowed more destruction in human lives than today.

What is so surprising to me with this reality is that so many Christians go to such great lengths to explain, justify,  argue for and rationalize the use of such products and defend them, without much thought for the scriptural, church and health concerns let alone consider their own holy influence compromised by their use.

Last Sunday we focused on the issue of relationships and intimate sexuality at NFCN. Think of the compounded effects of sexual promiscuity, unfaithfulness and stubbornly refusing to limit our sexual intimacy to the intended design for it by our Creator. Yet so many Christian believers young and old try to push the limits, convincing themselves they will avoid the painful consequences or seek forgiveness later, or argue for the sexual "rights" of others.

I always told our daughters every drink is one step closer to a problem.  Every sexual encounter outside of God's design is another potential consequence to deal with; physically, emotionally and/or spiritually. It wasn't popular parenting. And it isn't popular preaching. But it's truth.

I would rather pursue the holiness of God than flirt with fiascos in my life.  Shouldn't we be the people who walk away from instead of running towards potential problems?  Isn't our clear and clean witness and influence still worth something in this confused world?

I'm thankful we left our legalistic and judgmental tendencies behind us for the most part.  Holiness is more about unobstructed relationship with God than external rule keeping to be sure.  But somehow I can't get comfortable with the pursuit of a holy life and the incessant flirtation with that which is capable of so much destruction.  I hope I never do.  What about you?

Pastor Ulmet
