Yes, 850x return-on-investment is real, in fact it's the average of our 5 field trials.

Yes, we have the data to back that up – reach out if interested.)

Many of the most important lessons I share come from my own failures. Personally & professionally it sometimes seems like I must have more than nine lives, because I have enjoyed the privilege of much more than my fair share of madcap mistakes, yet I'm still here, sadder but wiser, as the Music Man might say.

^ ]

I founded Systems Thinking Institute to close the gap between what we're taught and what actually works in creating consistent, long-term operational success across the board in mid-size to large organizations. (Real sustainability, not to be confused with so-called green initiatives.)

Seeing well-meaning men & women wear themselves out doing things that had as much chance of success as building a snowman in the Sahara drove me to define and deliver solutions that have exponentially improved the operations where they've been implemented.

So many of today's software-seduced techies have confused making lots of money with long-term success. The most important currencies are never traded on any bourse.

^ ]

As talent is truly gender-blind, money in the hands of a talented entrepreneur with rock-solid values is wonderful, empowering communities, securing their future. Money in the hands of people who lack such values, is corrosive to the foundations of a free society.

"Solving Tomorrow's Problems Today"

…is the essential message of risk management.

It's not disaster recovery or business continuity.

It's not HR or operations.

It's not a separate discipline created in yet another silo.

It is, I would suggest, equivalent to
the very best customer service anywhere on the planet.

Why? Because lifetime customer value
is a core metric of the resilience of any business.

To deliver exceptional performance usually means upsetting the apple cart. Let that sink in. When we personally and as an organization, are committed to delivering results that are way above so-called normal, it takes a brave heart to do some respectful, loving yet firm mythbusting.

Trust comes from shared outlooks and experiences

In the previous issue, I mentioned that the lack of mature discernment in today's digital citizens has given dangerous myths the purchase, or cliffside foothold they need to take root and grow. One of these myths is put forth by well-meaning people who apparently never bother to do their homework.

^ ]

As a deaf woman in technology, I've had to work more than twice as hard as my hearing female peers, not to mention harder than my male peers. If there is true discrimination, of course root it out. Too often, those promoting discord see their power eclipsed by true solutions, so they foment still. [Tweet this!]

Exceptional performers are like the mountain goats who eat these cliffside myths for lunch. Combining what Mary Erdoes calls "superhard work, first in, last out" these leaders and leaders-to-be, make gender, race, and physical factors irrelevant. One of the most outstanding complements I believe can be paid to the movie War Room, goes well beyond the calibre of the acting. The scriptwriters, entire supporting staff from director on down, come together to make race irrelevant to the story. One is captivated, mesmerized by the sheer talent on display.

^ ]

Relationships build companies. They are built person-to-person. [Tweet this!] When you try to get software to build relationships, you get a Chimera. Plain & simple. German data giant SAP is in the Chimera business, always has been, always will be, unless they get a DNA transfusion. Yes they make $8B+ USD, yet the amount of people who passionately hate them is a clear indicator that something is amiss in their total lifecycle model.

Much the same can be said about venture capital (VC) business models. The math involved in getting the investment returns that VCs promise means that they have built-in SAP-style failures, which the outsized earnings of the so-called unicorns allow these funds the pretty fiction of ignoring their 90%+ failure rate.

Systemkey™ Structured Questions 'humanize' big data

Marie Curie, Nancy Wake, Condoleezza Rice, Sigrid Undset. All successful. None would call themselves victims. They're in the Chimera-slaying business, although none of them would describe themselves as such. Systemkey Risk Solutions has pioneered the Structured Questions framework that tames the chimera of big data-driven problems and makes parts of it human and human-scale again. For real data warehouses, people need to pony up the coin to use Ab Initio. For the vast majority, for the rest of us, we'll all be better off if we bring the real, fully human, heart, mind & soul back into our business and put the kabosh on worshiping at the altar of software.

Whether it's IBM and The Economist telling us global managers seek staff with cross-disciplinary insight by a 3:1 ratio over any other skills, or the NY Times telling us there is no real substitute for physical presence:

Making Risk Social to Make You Safer SM
is the heart of the Systemkey revolution.

^ ]

Or maybe it's just your grandpa giving you
a tap on the arm; telling you to get off your high horse and respect the people who work for you. It all distills down to a single phrase: people reserve their choicest tidbits of information – the little nuances that make the biggest difference – for people they trust.

Trust is built in person, over time. Not via SMS (text) or even by video, although I'm a great proponent of rich media to leverage trust. Brands in the Systemkeytool kit, including RedSkyRisk Assessment software and Semantic Compressionprocess management are threads in the social fabric that makes up the uniform operating culture we call business intimacy.

^ ]

For the pervs who haven't ever left high school, business intimacy sounds like a sketchy PG-13 movie. For captains of industry and business owners who understand their market leadership depends on leveraging the trust their staff and supply chain partners have invested in them, business intimacy is the magic carpet woven from thousands and thousands of 15 second "moments of truth" where people get honored for
  • » doing the job they were hired to do,
  • »for showing up when the average person would bail,
  • »or simply for having the guts to try again,
when the scores don't look that hot and you'd really rather just go home.

^ ]

Business intimacy, the new BI, is what delivers the radical difference between 95% and five nines: 99.999%! Sample cover of Business Intimacy: The New BI Anyone worth listening to:
  • » from a hotelier who plates out 700 in a weekend
  • » to a supply chain SVP who knows people on a first name basis six-layers deep in her vendor's organization,
can tell you that Mies van der Rohe is right: God is in the details – and so are your residual risks! Business intimacy is the compound-complex expression of that trust threaded through a growing manufacturing firm which itself is woven into a global supply network. And only the Systemkey Risk Modeling Language has the capacity to deliver business intimacy via structured questions, so that every level of the organization can purposefully deliver structured insights from unstructured data.

^ ]

Only dialog-driven risk discovery captures those intimate moments where your line leader takes you aside and tells you that the stellar career of the line foreman on vat 63 is really the work of 8 separate people, who have been covering for him when he goes to experimental radiation therapy that isn't covered by the company plan.

Business intimacy is the magic carpet that:
  • » floats you over an EMEA permitting protocol to get all the required new product introduction paperwork completed (without bribes!), across countries that haven't stopped squabbling in 3000 years,
  • » keeps a single-store contamination from creating a P&L loss that would result from pulling an entire production run off every shelf in the country,
  • » convinces bankers to give you off the record data on cyber-intrusions so you can provide the solutions they, moreover that their customers, actually need!
SystemkeyRisk Solutions deliver business intimacy. Business Intimacy fosters, reinforces and sustains trust. Trust will consistently deliver exponentially improved risk results, when compared on a total lifecycle costs basis.

Matt sent over a recent tweet about "technology debt" which is a Grandma-$3-word which roughly translates to:
This is the label we give to our careless craftsmanship,
so that we can ask for more time to do it over,
rather than doing it right the first time.

From 10 Oct 10 to 15 Oct 15

Sixty months, 1831 sunrises, 96 'mini-metonic cycles' (discussed in 19 Days to Business Intimacy: read an excerpt, buy the book) and thousands upon thousands of opportunities to uplift and encourage those around us. Our five brands have matured.

We'd love to hear how we've impacted you, personally &|or in your work. If the answer is not at all, then we're still far from achieving all that our team was put on earth to accomplish.

The left-to-right logo progression gives some idea of the maturing from technically talented yet frenetic activity to purposeful achievement in several aspects of our strategic plan.

Systems Thinking Institute Press was founded to develop & distribute resources that foster business intimacy.

Over the span of these past five Octobers, we've traveled to Malta (twice), Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Germany, UK, Peru, meeting business leaders and regular folks, asking lots of questions and observing common themes. We've researched several business markets here in the continental US.

Over the past five years, STI has produced 7 books and mapped out 30 more. We've developed workshops, works that integrate faith & finance, markets & morals and web best practice resources.

Each media resource contributes to our strategic plan to equip people and teams with tools for fostering cross-disciplinary insight, one of the key components of business intimacy.

Our flagship work from the Skerja Press imprint: 19 Days to Business Intimacy: How to Create and Sustain a Culture of Innovation. It has found admirers at Shell's Exploration Division, people in finance|tax and military audiences. 19 Days is the sylllabus for our Senior Leaders' retreat, Language Leverage Tier III: Vocal Presents – Using the gift of YOUR voice.

Our long-form business fable, the Blue Two saga, launches with two volumes that make up the third book of the series. Like the Star Wars double trilogy, the first book issued is not the first book of the series:

A Romance of Character
Vol I: A Face on the Platform
Vol II: Capture the Flag!

A short-form business fable, The Copper Ladle, a retelling of the children's classic Stone Soup, with mentor notes for business audiences.

A young adult adventure to introduce the Glittering Carbon imprint: The Aliquot Letters, focused on teen girls

The initial volume of the Letters from the Spice Islands relationship series: Tidore, named for the one of the five largest of the real Spice Islands.

Our sister organization, the STETA Group: a chamber of commerce for risk, has produced the Systemkey Risk Analysts Training Manual, documenting the rich capacity of the Systemkey™ Risk Modeling Language. As the core of the Systemkey™ Platform, XML-structured SRML was designed to transform how risk is measured and managed by delivering more granular detail on risk exposures. More than mere software, Systemkey™ implementations disruptively innovate via Business Intimacy, that climate where partners trust us enough to tell us what we need to hear, rather than what they think we want to hear.

A technical paper written at the request of Argonne National Labs, gives some insights into the depth of projects SRML can handle.

We sincerely look forward to hearing from you!
