Our News
November 2015

The good news for the LLENs across the state is that we have been refunded for the next 4 years.

Unfortunately, the funding is not at similar levels to the previous funding, however we will continue to establish the initiatives that are now supporting many young people across our region.

We are currently awaiting directions from the DET for 2016 and look forward continuing our work.

Message from the CEO

I feel privileged to be appointed as the new MMV LLEN CEO and have enjoyed meeting many wonderful people, over my first twelve weeks, who share our commitment to encouraging and supporting young people on their journey into employment. It’s also an exciting time to join the LLEN, now that we have certainty of funding and can make longer-term plans to make a difference.

So, how does the LLEN add value to all this good work, over the next four years? For me, our key role is to join with our many partners to create a system which grows the capacity and confidence of young people to navigate their way to their employment goal in an increasingly complex world.  I will keep you posted, as our forward plans take shape.

Best wishes,

JobCraft Talent Community

Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley LLEN’s JobCraft Talent Community connects young people to entry level employment, alternative education opportunities and further support as required. By joining JobCraft, young people gain access to exclusive local job opportunities, latest news on courses and updates from local agencies ensuring young people can make the most of their options.

The last month has been very exciting for the JobCraft team with the launch of our new promotional video. The video, which was produced with the help of the MVI team, will be used across a range of platforms to encourage young people to sign up with the JobCraft talent community.

Term four is the busiest time of the year for the JobCraft team. We will be out and about each week talking to students across the community about career pathways and looking at their options for the future. We also begin a series of workshops as part of our exciting new partnership with The Huddle at North Melbourne Football Club. Here we will be talking to young people about employability skills such as interview skills, what future jobs might look like, where to look for job opportunities and more!

Questions of Engagement

Questions of Engagement
Improving the learning experience of students in Years 5-8.

Questions of Engagement (Q of E) September 2013 – December 2015. Possibility of extending to 2016

Project Status
As schools have moved well into the trialing of strategies to address various issues raised by the research their excitement at value of the MES and the particular value of the focus groups has become more evident.

Outcomes achieved over the past month
  • Schools are suggesting more and more ways of getting value from Q of E for example one school trialing the GANAG approach to lesson planning is now conducting, using the Student Placement Teacher, focus groups after each unit of study and modifying the next unit in light of the findings.
  • The value of the Student Placement Teachers is now highlighted as crucial to the project.
  • M&MVLLEN presented the Q of E process at the Joining the Dots (transitions)  Conference on September 9
  • The focus on the importance of teaching students from an early age to become independent learners is being recognized as key to ensuring engagement and to preparing young people for a future in which they are likely to have 5 careers and 17 different jobs 60% of the careers they are aspiring to will either not exist in 5 years time or will require different skills.
Work Plan for the next month
  • Complete student focus group interviews
  • Meet with schools to gather staff input in response to students‘ views
  • Prepare a case to promote the value of Q of E to DET and to other schools in this LLEN and the Region
  • Develop and finance a strategy to continue the trial in 2016 for at least six months.
Project Outlook
  • No foreseeable risks to delivering the 2015 report on time
  • Budget tight
  • 2016 to be discussed

Moonee Valley Internships

Moonee Valley Internships (MVI) had a successful year so far.

MVI offers internship opportunities to young people at risk of long-term-unemployment to gain additional skills and support to enter the competitive job market. The project further links young people to a professional mentor and supports young people with education and employment pathways towards landing that first job.

MVI has succeeded in the following:
  • Recruited and placed ten (10) interns in 2015. They have made significant progress in their education and employment pathways (refer to Appendix 5: Success Stories in 2015)
  • Supporting all interns with education and employment pathways and are continuing to do so.
  • Successfully recruited, trained mentors and have matched them with current and past interns. We are currently planning the next mentor recruitment phase.
  • Supported interns with an internship allowance ($20 per day) to ensure access to transport and lunch considering their level of marginalization
  • Provided three (3) hands-on project management workshops – establishing a small scale real life project (refer to Jobcraft Video Clip above for most recent completion of project)
  • Developed, updated and used extensive resources for MVI that will support our work for the remainder of the project in 2016.

Maribyrnong Jobs

Maribyrnong Jobs is funded through the Department of Human Services where the M&MV LLEN has partnered with Maribyrnong City Council and Women's Health West, Maribyrnong Jobs has presented an exciting opportuntiy for the LLEN and its partners to engage in a trial employment project currently being funded in just Maribyrnong and Dandenong.

On working with the Burmese Community Liaising Officer
In 2015 the Maribyrnong Jobs project has been working closely with the local Burmese (Haka Chin) Community and Kyaw Kyaw (known as Jo Jo) started working with us in June to provide the language skills and support for his community.  The project identified that many within the community have arrived in Australia with significant skills in carpentry, painting, tiling and horticulture and a great deal of experience.  Many community members have now been assisted to set up small businesses and go through construction safety training so they can use their skills as subcontractors.

The language barrier has been quite a significant challenge to this community who have come to Australia as refugees and many with limited schooling. Maribyrnong Jobs has been able to liaise with employers to set up interpreters for induction and training in a bid to overcome this barrier.  At least 60 local Burmese community members have been assisted through this project to date and approximately 29 people have been able to gain employment so far.  A further 26 people are currently going through training and induction processes.  Kyaw Kyaw said, “My community members are all very happy now that we know there are many different types of jobs we can do here.”

Farewell:
The coordinator Natalie Thomas has moved on to a different role with Maribyrnong City Council. We wish her all the best on her future endeavours and thank her for her great work over the past few years at the MMVLLEN.
